Labcorp is seeking a Technical Director for our high-volume HLA lab in Burlington, NC. This position is responsible for performing final review and release of histocompatibility and transplant related testing. The successful candidate will be expected to hold/obtain their American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Diplomate status and qualify as Laboratory Director accredited by ASHI.
The laboratory is a CAP/CLIA/ASHI accredited lab performing HLA typing of donors and recipients, disease association testing, crossmatching, antibody testing, STR-based engraftment monitoring, and sequencing of KIR, CMV, presumptive ABO/Rh and additional non-HLA loci to support primarily stem cell transplant, diagnostic, and clinical trial applications.

The Technical Director will ensure scientific quality in the laboratory, assist operations with technical troubleshooting, and interact with employees at various levels. Must be able to serve as a clinical consultant to internal stakeholders, as well as external physicians and clients. As a senior member of the HLA lab director team, this individual will assist in case sign-out, new assay development, staff training, mentorship of other technical directors, and review of potential new histocompatibility and transplant related business opportunities including clinical trials.

Job Responsibilities:
- Review, interpret, and report test results reliably, accurately, and with integrity
- Accurately and promptly responds to client inquiries that are technical in nature
- Effectively communicates with clients, clinicians, and various laboratory staff at all levels
- Oversees the technical component of the laboratory to ensure that patient results are reported reliably and in a timely fashion
- Ensures accuracy for all testing in the lab, and addresses root causes when issues arise
- Ensures all testing follows ASHI standards
- Guides implementation of new assays and instrumentation in the lab in collaboration with the laboratory director, HLA discipline director, lab operations, research and development, and commercial teams
- Keeps up with scientific advances and literature, offering perspectives about improvements
- An interest in providing staff educational seminars, participation in national technical societies and publishing peer-reviewed manuscripts is encouraged
- Sets the tone in the lab for performance, quality, and leadership
- Shares experiences and ideas with discipline directors, such as improvements to SOPs and reports, interfaces with IT or additional support teams as needed
- Works effectively with the Laboratory Director to deliver on the above responsibilities to meet service levels
Job Requirements:
- Hold an earned doctoral degree in a chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science or MD degree
- Certification and experience in hematopoietic stem cell/bone marrow transplantation is required
- Solid organ experience is preferred
- Board Certification from the American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI), or eligibility to take the boards.
- Leadership skills to work with other directors and lab staff, developing their capabilities and involving them in problem-solving/urgent matters
- Strong communication skills; both written and verbal
- Deductive reasoning/analytical skills to reach a resolution to customer inquiries or lab opportunities/issues
- Understanding of test validations, quality control and quality management; proficiency testing; and regulatory requirements for HLA/ASHI testing
- ASHI accreditation or experience in solid organ transplantation preferred
- NYS Certificate of Qualification in histocompatibility and/ or transplant monitoring preferred
