• Duration: 11 weeks, full-time
• Dates of Internship: June 1, 2026 - August 14, 2026
• Location: Westborough, Massachusetts
• Hours: 40 hrs/week
• Eligibility: Preferred candidates are rising juniors and seniors (Dec 2026 through June 2028 graduation) who are currently enrolled in a relevant degree program; however, all current students pursuing related studies are encouraged to apply.

Labcorp is a leading healthcare company dedicated to advancing genomic research and drug development.

The Microbiota Informatics Team in the Office of the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) performs research and development (R&D) in the general areas of microbiota (bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other pathogens) and their role in human health, wellness and diseases.

The research spans the basic research on microbiota genomics to development of tools and tests to pursue pathogen surveillance in outbreaks and diagnostic applications for early detection and monitoring of infections and diseases.

The team collaborates extensively with other R&D teams at Labcorp on many ongoing projects (microbiome, viral and pathogen genomics) involving technologies spanning from PCR to sequencing (16S, metagenomics, viral genome sequencing). This provides a unique opportunity for students to interact with scientists and get hands-on experience and knowledge of solving real life problems using data science and bioinformatics to advance Labcorp's portfolio of surveillance and diagnostic offerings.

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled bioinformatics intern (Graduate Student - PhD preferred) to join our team. This internship provides an excellent opportunity for a graduate student to apply their advanced knowledge and skills in bioinformatics, computational biology, and data analysis. As a Bioinformatics Intern, you will collaborate closely with our research scientists and data analysts, contributing to high-impact projects that involve complex data interpretation and algorithm development.

Key Responsibilities

• Advanced Data Analysis: Perform sophisticated analysis of microbiome, bacterial, viral and pathogen genomics and transcriptomics, or proteomic datasets using state-of-the-art bioinformatics tools and pipelines.

• Algorithm Development and Optimization: Develop, refine, and implement algorithms for analyzing and interpreting microbiome and other genomics/transcriptomics datasets.

• Software Development: Contribute to the development and enhancement of bioinformatics software tools and pipelines, ensuring they meet the research needs of the team.

• Collaborative Research: Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, providing bioinformatics expertise to ongoing research projects and studies.

• Data Interpretation and Reporting: Analyze and interpret complex biological data, preparing detailed reports and presentations to communicate findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Literature Review and Research: Stay abreast of the latest bioinformatics methodologies and advancements, integrating new approaches into ongoing projects.

• Mentorship and Guidance: Provide guidance to junior team members or interns, sharing your expertise and contributing to a collaborative learning environment.

Education/Qualifications/Skills:

• Education: Currently enrolled in a graduate program (master's or Ph.D. preferred) in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genetics, Computer Science, or a related field.

• Technical Expertise: Strong proficiency in programming languages commonly used in bioinformatics, such as Python, R, Perl, or Java. Experience with high-throughput sequencing data (e.g., microbiome, metagenomics, pathogen whole genome sequencing, RNA-Seq, DNA-Seq) and familiarity with bioinformatics tools like BLAST, GATK, Bowtie, and microbiome and viral genome analysis tools.

• Analytical Skills: Demonstrated ability to analyze large, complex datasets and derive meaningful insights.

• Experience: Previous research experience in microbiome analysis, viral genome analysis, bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field. Experience with machine learning or AI applications in biology is a plus.

• Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to convey complex technical information to both scientific and non-scientific audiences.

• Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

• Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail with strong organizational and documentation skills

Pay Range: $35 - $40/hr

All job offers will be based on a candidate's skills and prior relevant experience, applicable degrees/certifications, as well as internal equity and market data.

Benefits: Employees regularly scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week are eligible for comprehensive benefits including: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, STD/LTD, 401(k), Paid Time Off (PTO) or Flexible Time Off (FTO), Tuition Reimbursement and Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
