The Role

As an IMS DBA System Administrator, you will leverage extensive expertise in managing and optimizing IBM Information Management System (IMS) mainframe databases. Your primary responsibilities include ensuring database availability, integrity, and performance through advanced backup and recovery procedures, performance tuning, and issue resolution. Key duties involve designing IMS database structures (DBDs, PSBs, ACBs), maintaining robust database security, collaborating with developers to deliver effective database solutions, and acting as the technical authority for complex database challenges. This role frequently requires strategic planning and proactive client-focused solutions.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise:

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in IMS DBA environment with work management, user management, journal management and performance management
  • Act as support and domain expert for IMS DBA and system components; provide direct technical support as needed in the planning, coordination, installation, implementation and testing of releases, upgrades, or changes to IMS DBA subsystem, network, and component software
  • Experience with mainframe IMS Full-Function and Fast Path databases in production environments.
  • Strong understanding of IMS utilities, DBRC, JCL, TSO/ISPF, and mainframe batch job troubleshooting.
  • Proficient understanding of database internals, logs, buffer pools, and catalog/directory management.
  • Experience with mainframe performance monitoring and tuning tools.
  • Solid experience with mainframe automation and scripting tools, and potentially Linux/Unix scripting.
  • Knowledge of related mainframe technologies such as CICS, COBOL, and data sharing.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to interface with technical and non-technical teams.
