Job Description

Position Overview
The Director of Elementary School Math is an essential position that sets the vision for K-4 Math instruction and drives K-4 Math achievement at KIPP NYC. The Director of Elementary School Math will report to the Senior Director of K-12 Math and work to design and implement high priority Math initiatives across KIPP NYC. High priority math initiatives will be determined in collaboration with the Chief Academic Officer, the Managing Directors of Schools, and the Teaching and Learning Support (TLS) team. The Director of Elementary School Math will also be expected to observe classrooms and provide feedback to teachers and leaders on implementation of high priority Math initiatives across KIPP NYC.

This role is based in NYC and may require travel to our schools. Cadence and frequency of travel to schools is determined by your leadership team. If you relocate outside of a commutable distance or out of the state of NY, your employment will be subject to review, which may include separation from KIPP NYC. It is important that you notify HR if you move or have plans to relocate.

General Duties and Responsibilities (but are not limited to):

Curriculum Design and Management

  • Develop and oversee elementary school Math initiatives, using student and teacher performance data to align Math instruction with KIPP NYC's vision of exemplary teaching.
  • Lead and coordinate large-scale curricular development projects, including the roll-out of Eureka Math Squared across all elementary schools, engaging teacher leaders throughout the process.
  • Utilize deep understanding of Math content knowledge and effective instructional practices to design, revise, and evaluate Math curriculum documents, focusing on enhancing the quality of instruction and user experience with KIPP NYC's Eureka Math Squared, Cognitively Guided Instruction, Math Routines and Automaticity, and other ES Math curricula.

Assessment Design and Data Systems

  • Develop and design a cohesive summative and formative assessment strategy that accurately measures key knowledge and skills across a K-8 Math progression.
  • Collaborate with the Data and Assessment Team to create and manage a system for sharing assessment data results and analyses to the greater KIPP NYC teacher and leader community
  • Design and implement support for the first round of 3rd and 4th grade computer-based testing, which will launch in the 24-25 school year.
  • Create and manage system for sharing assessment data results and data trends with the KIPP NYC teacher and leader community.

School Support

  • Observe instructional practices in schools with a specific lens towards high priority and/or new ES Math initiatives to evaluate changes and determine next steps for teacher and leader support
  • Support school-based leaders in continually evaluating the effectiveness of the ES Math program overall based on our existing data systems

Professional Development

  • Provide targeted coaching and professional development experiences to principals and deans to support content knowledge development and curriculum implementation and innovation
  • Develop and facilitate regional professional development for teachers and leaders to ensure full implementation of curriculum and instructional initiatives in KIPP NYC's ES Math program

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in education and/or Math education preferred
  • Minimum 4 years exemplary Math teaching experience with strong student achievement results
  • Minimum 3 years exemplary teacher coaching and adult management experience
  • Deep knowledge of elementary Math content and learning theory, Next Generation Learning standards, current educational trends, blended learning practices, methods, research, and technology, and program planning and implementation
  • Knowledge of Eureka Math and Eureka Math Squared curricula preferred
  • Knowledge of Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) curricula preferred
  • Commitment to DEI practices and willingness to evolve curricula to be more culturally responsive and sustaining
  • Experience planning and leading engaging and effective professional development for adults
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop productive working relationships with multiple stakeholders across the organization
  • Experience into leading others through influence rather than formal managerial relationships
  • Meticulous attention to detail with an ability to produce high quality work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated passion for and a commitment to the KIPP mission for high quality public education and our core values.

Additional Information

Compensation and Benefits:

KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary ranging from $87,550 to $110,000 per year. Salary ranges at KIPP NYC are standardized based on role level and role function. Individual salaries are determined through a lens of equity, accounting for years of experience relevant to the role and scope of responsibilities, and are benchmarked against others within the same salary band. Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range, however they are ultimately determined by scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.
