Preclinical Sciences and Translational Safety (PSTS) division of J&J Innovative Medicine R&D is an integrated end to end organization encompassing bioanalysis, drug disposition and metabolism, in vivo sciences (IVS), investigative toxicology, pathology, science operations and data sciences, and toxicology, with a focus on understanding the disposition and potential risks of candidate therapeutics across all therapeutic areas and modalities, and covering the entire portfolio. This postdoctoral research will be carried out in the IVS group with collaborations across the PSTS division.

IVS is responsible for the oversight of all internal and external in vivo activities across the JNJ Innovative Medicine R&D portfolios with a focus on the core disciplines of Animal Welfare & Regulatory Compliance, External Engagement & 3Rs Innovation, In Vivo Models & Scientific Collaborations, Veterinary Care, In Vivo Training, and Vivarium Operations & Management.

J&J Innovative Medicine R&D Discovery is seeking a talented and innovative Postdoctoral Fellow 3R's (Reduction, Refinement, and Replacement) with extensive knowledge and expertise in the area of humanized mouse model development, and an interest in applying their knowledge to the pursuit of research in support of the 3Rs. In particular, the successful candidate will identify the leading mouse strains for the humanization of the immune system, optimize methods for humanization of the mouse immune system, and investigate the use of the humanized mouse immune system models as improved predictors of the immunotoxicity of biologics. The successful completion of this project is expected to provide more predictive preclinical models for use in safety and toxicity, as well as efficacy. Better predictive models for use in drug discovery and development will reduce the total number of animals used in the preclinical safety and toxicology assessment phase of the development of biologics, including reducing the use of higher species, in addition to supporting earlier attrition and reduced safety complication in the clinic.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will collaborate closely with IVS experts of in vivo model development, and with colleagues across PSTS to support the characterization of the functionality of the immune system across the different models established, and to assess the functionality of the models in a retrospective study of their ability to predict safety and toxicology impacts across a panel of therapeutic agents.
