APL is seeking experienced low temperature physicists. As a member of a multidisciplinary team, you will work on a variety of low-temperature experiments, including construction of cryogenic apparatuses, development of cryogenically cooled sensors, and exploration of novel quantum systems.

As a Low Temperature Physicist:

Your primary responsibility will be to develop creative, independent research in support of existing efforts. In addition, you will be encouraged to pursue new work in fields that is of interest to you and APLs sponsors. These will make use of APLs cryogenic user systems which include both a dry 1K and dry dilution refrigerator systems.

Low temperature physicists support existing programs through day-to-day operations of various cryogenic systems and experiments. They supply high-quality ideas and insights into both existing and future problems, leading to novel solutions adaptable to APL and sponsor needs.

You will collaborate with a diverse team of physicists, electrical engineers, materials scientists, and fabrication technicians to develop innovative device, sensor, system prototypes, new insights, and responsive proposals.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you:

  • Possess a PhD in physics or a closely related field (e.g., applied physics)
  • Have demonstrated ability to conceptualize, propose, and implement research concepts using cryogenic systems or in characterizing materials or systems at cryogenic temperatures.
  • Have a strong desire to work in an interdisciplinary, applied science environment.
  • Wish to apply your skills to new areas, expand your knowledge beyond low temperature physics, in order to protect the nation from its adversaries.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a TS/SCI+poly level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you:

  • Have experience studying cryogenic fluids such as superfluid helium.
  • Hold an active TS/SCI +poly security clearance.
