About This Role:

Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Electrical Engineer Intern to support our manufacturing engineering team in a Class II medical device production environment. The intern will gain hands-on experience with production line troubleshooting, test equipment maintenance, and process validation activities, while learning about FDA Quality System Regulations (21 CFR Part 820), ISO 13485, and relevant electrical safety standards. This role is ideal for students interested in applying electrical engineering skills in a regulated, high-precision manufacturing setting.

This internship is a 6-month term position and offers flexible scheduling to accommodate academic commitments, with the option for either part-time or full-time hours.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in troubleshooting and resolving electrical issues in production equipment, automated systems, and test fixtures.
  • Support preventive maintenance and calibration of electrical and electronic test equipment used in manufacturing and inspection.
  • Participate in process validation and equipment qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ) activities, documenting results per quality system requirements.
  • Work with manufacturing engineers to implement continuous improvement initiatives that enhance process reliability, efficiency, and yield.
  • Assist in updating and maintaining wiring diagrams, schematics, and equipment documentation.
  • Support integration of new production equipment by assisting with setup, verification, and operator training materials.
  • Collaborate with quality engineering to address nonconformances, root cause investigations, and corrective/preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Adhere to Good Documentation Practices (GDP) and maintain compliance with environmental health and safety (EHS) protocols.
Qualifications

Required:
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or related field.
  • Basic understanding of electrical principles, industrial electronics, and circuit troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with multimeters, oscilloscopes, and other diagnostic tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with engineers, technicians, and production staff.
Preferred:
  • Coursework or hands-on experience with manufacturing automation or industrial control systems (PLC, sensors, actuators).
  • Familiarity with IEC 60601 or other electrical safety standards.
  • Exposure to Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Experience creating or updating technical work instructions.

By the end of the 6-month internship, the student will have gained:
  • Practical experience in electrical troubleshooting and process support for medical device manufacturing.
  • Understanding of process validation and equipment qualification in a regulated environment.
  • Skills in technical documentation and cross-functional communication.
  • Exposure to continuous improvement methodologies and lean manufacturing tools.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed in both office and controlled manufacturing areas.
  • Requires use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when working on the production floor.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and work at production equipment for extended periods.
