Job Description

Primary Function of Position

Design and create pioneering laser manufacturing processes and equipment used to support the production of the Intuitive Ion robotic instruments and accessories in a multi-national manufacturing environment. The Staff Manufacturing Engineer is an individual with high energy, ownership, integrity, and accountability who will drive laser-related project planning, prototyping and feasibility development, Design of Experiments (DOE) and process validation activities across a variety of laser processes including but not limited to welding, cutting, and ablation. The successful candidate should also provide technical leadership within the Automation, Equipment, and Test Group (AET) and inspire and work closely with the team of junior and senior engineering staff to implement laser process best practices.

Essential Job Duties

  • Design, operate, and maintain in-house proprietary laser processes and systems from concept to full implementation.
  • Investigate and implement optimal laser systems and services that meet functional, safety, documentation, validation requirements, and industry standards.
  • Direct and perform development and validation activities on laser manufacturing equipment and processes.
  • Perform troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and maintenance on laser systems.
  • Implement, support, and monitor proper laser safety procedures.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentor equipment staff on laser system design and integration with manufacturing equipment.
  • Assist in creating and managing laser system specifications and schedules that best support company and department goals.
  • Interface with a multitude of technical and counterpart teams in the creation and sustaining of laser systems and production operations.
  • Establish and manage external resources (system integrators and vendors) in the planning and execution of laser process and equipment projects.
  • Remain up-to-date on industry trends and developments of laser system and technology.
  • Support quality and internal/external audits as required.
  • Support other laser-related operations and duties as required.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 8 years of laser services and design experience; medical device industry experience a plus
  • Expertise in laser system design and specification, operation, testing, and maintenance
  • Expertise in developing laser processes involving metals and plastics
  • Strong experience in DOE, problem solving, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis
  • Strong understanding of laser safety, including procedures for identifying and mitigating risks
  • Experience in planning and executing project deliverables on tight deadlines
  • Strong verbal and written communication and organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a strong customer service attitude
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally up to 10%

Required Education and Training

  • Minimum BS in Mechanical, Material Science, Welding Engineering, or related fields

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, benefits, and equity. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications.
