Job Description

Primary function of the position:

The Optical Engineer has a deep knowledge in technical optics. The engineer identifies new technologies for testing and production of optical components. The engineer is responsible for scouting, introducing, and testing of new manufacturing capability for optical components. The engineer is responsible for introduction, development, and testing of measurement systems and techniques. Additionally, the engineer is responsible for measurement and evaluation of new optical components. The engineer also acts as a cross-departmental contact for optic related questions, such as optical measurement methods or quality assessment of optical components.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Introduction and refinement of measurement techniques and equipment for product testing, qualification and validation.
  • Development of new optical measurement methods (that can also be used within production processes).
  • Performance of optical measurements for new and existing products.
  • Support development with optical tests to qualify and verify quality and performance of
    optical systems together with international partners (external and internal).
  • Scouting of new production techniques for optical components
  • Performance testing and refinement of existing production techniques for optical components as well as introduction and refinement of new production techniques for optical components.
  • Interaction with potential suppliers and development partners
  • Cross-functional interaction to review the compatibility of production techniques with existing production facilities and designs
  • Support data analyze during product testing, qualification and validation.
  • Cross-departmental contact for optic related questions, such as optical measurement methods or quality assessment of optical components.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and accurately (written and oral) across all levels and functions, including presenting to a technical audience.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • BE or BS with a minimum of 5 years, or ME/MS with a minimum of 3 years work experience. Physics, optical Engineering, Microsystems Engineering or equivalent. Professional work experience in measurement of optical and opto-electrical products preferred. 
  • Deep knowledge in technical optics.
  • Experience in optical measurement techniques (preferred: implementation and application)
  • Experience in optical or microsystem manufacturing techniques (preferred: lens manufacturing and coating)
  • Knowledge in automatization of measurements and analysis (preferred: Python skills)
  • Knowledge of lens manufacturing processes (preferred)
  • Experience with optical simulation software (preferred)
  • Experience with CAD software (preferred).
  • Hands-on engineering with the proven ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Capability in all phases of the product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debug, verification, qualification, and transfer
  • Excellent documentation and technical skills and the ability to communicate in German and English at all levels of the organization, both verbally and in writing
  • Work well in a multi-cultural team environment, including team members in remote locations
  • Willingness to travel for several days within Germany, Europe and USA is assumed (up to approx. 10% per year)
