Job Description

Primary Function of Position: Intuitive seeks an experienced and forward-thinking interventional pulmonologist to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of its endoluminal technology and impacting the lives of millions of patients. This unique opportunity allows a practicing interventionalist to blend their clinical expertise with a part-time position as an Associate Medical Officer. The successful candidate will co-manage the Endoluminal Medical Office, engaging in a wide spectrum of medical affairs activities. This role offers a distinctive chance to contribute directly to the evolution of medical technology by providing crucial clinical and medical insights to product and procedure development teams. The influence of this position extends to the assessment of clinical benefit-risk, ensuring patient safety and product efficacy. Furthermore, the Medical Officer will support medical research initiatives aimed at increasing the adoption of Intuitive's innovative solutions. A key aspect of the role involves advising on reimbursement strategies, market access initiatives, and the development and publication of compelling clinical and health-economic evidence. This position necessitates close collaboration with various internal departments within Intuitive, including Post Market Surveillance and Investigation, Medical Safety Office, Regulatory Compliance, Quality, and Product Development Engineering. Regular interaction with Clinical Affairs, Training and Education, and Global Market Access teams is also anticipated, underscoring the cross-functional nature of this impactful role.

Roles and Responsibilities:This position holds the responsibility and authority to:

  • Driving Clinically Relevant Product Development:
    • Act as the clinical voice within product development teams, ensuring that new technologies are aligned with clinical needs and physician workflows.
    • Collaborate extensively with clinical engineering, user experience designers, and product marketing managers to integrate clinical insights into the design and functionality of new products.
    • Steer the development of comprehensive clinical test protocols to rigorously evaluate the safety and effectiveness of new technologies.
    • Perform hands-on clinical evaluations, providing critical feedback to refine product design and optimize usability.
    • Ensuring Product Safety and Performance:
      • Provide deft clinical risk assessment to guide Post Market Surveillance and Investigation teams in evaluating complaints, adverse events, and product performance trends.
      • Evaluate real-world clinical data to identify the potential impact on patient safety and overall product effectiveness.
      • Closely participate in Health Hazard Evaluations (HHEs), contributing clinical expertise to risk assessments and mitigation strategies.
      • Contribute to the drafting of reports and assist in formulating responses to inquiries from global regulatory agencies.
      • Engage with practicing physicians to gather firsthand clinical insights related to product performance and any reported adverse events.
      • Expanding the Clinical Utility of the Ion Endoluminal System:
        • Partner with cross-functional leadership to develop and execute the clinical strategy for expanding the applications of the Ion Endoluminal System.
        • Contribute to the overarching strategic direction for the integration of Intuitive's technology within the field of interventional pulmonology.
        • Establish dedicated working relationships with key physician opinion leaders to collaboratively evaluate and develop novel procedures utilizing the Ion Endoluminal System.
        • Provide adept guidance in the development of standardized clinical pathways that ensure teachable, repeatable, and sustainable procedural adoption.
        • Co-chair investigator meetings, providing leadership and guidance to researchers conducting clinical studies focused on the Ion system.
        • Generating Robust Clinical and Economic Evidence:
          • Closely participate in the creation and implementation of strategies aimed at generating compelling evidence that supports the clinical benefits and economic value proposition of the Ion Endoluminal System.
          • Leverage a deep understanding of existing medical literature to contextualize and enhance the interpretation of findings from clinical studies.
          • Apply sound quantitative analytical skills to critically evaluate and validate procedures for their clinical and health-economic impact, contributing to study design, critical analysis, and the editing of research outputs.
          • Assist in the identification of qualified investigators, the development of robust study protocols, and the design of scientifically sound studies intended for publication and regulatory submissions.
          • Advancing Physician Training and Education:
            • Support the ongoing development and refinement of physician training programs designed to deliver high-quality education and accelerate proficiency in using Intuitive's technologies.
            • Conduct critical reviews of existing physician training, proctoring, and credentialing programs to ensure they meet the highest standards and identify opportunities for enhancement.
            • Collaborate closely with the training organization to revise and update program content as necessary, ensuring alignment with best practices and current clinical knowledge.
            • Partner with relevant surgical societies to co-develop training programs, leveraging their established expertise and credibility within the medical community.
            • Informing Regulatory Decisions:Provide expert clinical guidance to the regulatory team by thoroughly evaluating clinical outcomes, reported incidents, and the potential clinical impact of proposed product modifications and policy changes.
              • Embracing Organizational Principles:Ensure that the organization's core vision and values are consistently integrated into all aspects of decision-making and professional conduct.

Qualifications

Skills, Experience, Education, & Training:In order to adequately perform the responsibilities of this position, the team member must have:

  • MD with a minimum 10 years’ experience with a focus on interventional pulmonology, preferable in academic medicine
  • Current or probable future user of the Ion Endoluminal System
  • 50-80% part time Intuitive employee with benefits
  • Residing on the West Coast or open to relocation.
  • Established reputation within the international IP community to help facilitate interactions between Intuitive and external key opinion leaders
  • Expertise in peer reviewed clinical publications
  • Proven ability to guide, influence and work well in a cross functional team environment with ability to be a hands-on as needed
  • Business background or experience preferred
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Excellent project management, planning, decision making, negotiating and change management skills

  • Proven Administrative Acumen: budgets, project/program cost tracking and other technical management administrative experience
