Introduction

We're looking for a detail-oriented and proactive Data Security & Privacy Specialist to join our team. In this role, you will support various client projects by designing, implementing, and executing data security and privacy controls in alignment with IBM Americas' Data Security & Privacy (DS&P) Framework.

In this role, you'll work in one of our IBM Consulting Client Innovation Centers (Delivery Centers), where we deliver deep technical and industry expertise to a wide range of public and private sector clients around the world. Our delivery centers offer our clients locally based skills and technical expertise to drive innovation and adoption of new technology.

  • Design and implement data security and privacy controls tailored to the requirements of each project.
  • Review and interpret client contracts to identify and apply data protection obligations.
  • Plan and execute project-specific controls, ensuring alignment with contractual and regulatory requirements.
  • Read and attest to internal security policies and the DS&P Framework; successfully complete an internal DS&P certification exam.
  • Communicate project control posture effectively to stakeholders including project executives, project managers, and technical teams.
  • Collaborate with project teams to understand, document, and support technical and operational processes related to data protection.

Bachelor's Degree

Required technical and professional expertise

  • Solid understanding of industry best practices in data security and privacy.
  • Experience or exposure to planning, designing, and implementing data security controls.
  • Ability to review contractual requirements and translate them into effective security controls.
  • Working knowledge of data classification standards (e.g., PI, SPI, BSI), associated risks, and appropriate protection techniques.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills, with the ability to clearly document and present findings.
  • Proven ability to identify, assess, and manage data security and privacy risks.
  • Foundational knowledge of regulatory frameworks and compliance standards such as PIPEDA, HIPAA, PCI, GDPR, etc.
  • Familiarity with segregation of duties concepts, including identifying potential conflicts and applying appropriate mitigating controls.
  • Understanding of user identity management, including the ability to identify and document user ID usage and access.

Preferred technical and professional experience

  • Awareness of industry-standard frameworks and best practices such as ISO/IEC 27001, NIST, SOX, SAS70, and IT General Controls.
  • Experience supporting or implementing data privacy and compliance initiatives.
  • Familiarity with access management concepts and separation of duties principles.
  • Broader exposure to global data protection regulations and standards (e.g., HIPAA, GDPR, PCI DSS, PIPEDA).
  • Working knowledge of data classification methodologies and protection techniques for sensitive data types (e.g., PI, SPI, BSI).
  • Experience reviewing contracts with a focus on data security and privacy requirements.
  • Understanding of internal control frameworks and risk management practices related to data privacy.
