Your role and responsibilities

We are looking for talented designers to join the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY, to contribute to the development of advanced high-performance quantum circuits and exploratory technologies. We focus on system designs that enable the creation of differentiated solutions for a range of Quantum devices. Key areas of interest include analog circuits, microwave transmission, and lab skills in designing test equipment for high-speed signal transmission characterization.

In this role you will be responsible for designing and qualifying high density flex cable signal delivery paths for cryostat-based qubit control and readout electronics systems. The position involves close collaboration between theory, experimental, mechanical, and electronic system teams to develop and verify the signal integrity of a new generation of cryogenic and superconducting electronics and wiring. The system flex cabling path provides the transmission of microwave and other high-speed signals in a cryogenic superconducting environment. As a flex cable engineer you will need to design to meet specifications for signal quality and isolation, as well as to evaluate tradeoffs in signal density, reliability, and manufacturability. The work will require setting the RF and electrical specifications for the integrated system from initial concept, through vendor specification and selection, to component verification and integration for product delivery. The ideal candidate would have experience designing, testing, and characterizing components such as novel wiring and connectors for RF signal transmission and generation, ideally in cryogenic environments.

The work will involve exploratory technologies; as such it requires a deep understanding of the interaction between theory and development needs. Prior experience in high-speed signal cabling and connector design and test is highly beneficial. As signal paths may include passive and active components, experience in circuit design in exploratory technologies, such as superconducting circuits, is desirable (but not required). The candidate should have strong hands-on lab skills. A track record of completing complex integrated RF system cabling designs demonstrating innovative elements is also desirable. The work site location will be the IBM TJ Watson Lab in Yorktown NY, however some travel will be required to the IBM Quantum customer system locations in Poughkeepsie NY.

We are looking for a team player with strong writing and presentation skills, able to create and communicate technical ideas, and collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team. This job will entail driving the development of new intellectual property. The candidate should have experience with relevant development tools, including Cadence and possibly Mentor, ADS, HFSS, and other industry standard tools. The candidate must be able to work successfully with a diverse and dynamic team of both operational and technical personnel, collaborate with team members, work independently, and take own initiative
