Design and Prototype Mechanical Engineer (Early Career)

Malibu, CA

This position will be performed in HRL's Malibu and/or Calabasas locations.
In this role, you will be part of a multidisciplinary department with projects designing, building and testing novel mechanical components, multi-functional subassemblies, imaging systems and mechanical systems using a variety of fabrication techniques, including additive manufacturing.

Essential Duties:
Rapid design, building and testing of prototypes and fixtures
Create computer-aided design (CAD) models assemblies and appropriately GD&T drawings for in-house fabrication or quote.
Use engineering principals, numerical calculations and simplified hand calculations to guide design and analysis
Fabricate and assemble samples, fixtures and prototypes

Select appropriate materials based on relevant properties and compatibility with the environment during process and deployment
Work in a laboratory setting for testing and evaluation of: mechanical, thermal, chemical or electrical properties
Work with the machine shop to fabricate components
Work with outside vendors and suppliers to source materials, services, and components for prototyping and low-rate initial production
Summarize findings for weekly report out, monthly presentations and written reports

Required Skills:
Mechanical design with CAD tools (e.g. Solidworks)
Familiarity with analysis and testing of thermal, mechanical or electrical components.
Creative problem solving and strong organizational skills.
Excellent communication skills; includes both oral and written.
Ability to work well in a team environment and work in a matrix organization.
A motivated individual who can work independently, within project budget and schedule
Prior programming background (Python, Matlab), electronics prototyping knowledge (Arduino, National Instruments) or finite element analysis (COMSOL, Abaqus) is a plus.

Required Education:
BA/BS or Master's degree in engineering or physical sciences
1-3 years of experience

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to work for extended periods while standing or sitting at a computer workstation.
Must be familiar with common laboratory safety procedures.
Must be sufficiently mobile, have visual and hearing acuity, and manual dexterity to work within a laboratory environment.
Must be on-site in Malibu or Calabasas at least 4 days a week.

Compensation:
The base salary range for this full-time position $76,530 - $93,320 + bonus + benefits.
