About the Role:

The Network and Unified Communications Engineer III is a highly experienced member of a small high-performance team responsible for designing, implementing, and providing operational support of an advanced pioneering research network in one of the world's premier Life Sciences Research Institutes. The position requires an individual to engineer and maintain the local area LAN/WAN network, and the Cisco Unified Communication Manager, and the Aruba Wireless LAN in support of administrative operations and scientific research. Additionally, the candidate will be required to stay ahead of emerging technologies and identify cost-effective solutions to continually improve the quality and performance of network and network-enabled services.

What you'll do:

LAN, Wireless and Unified Communications:

Overall, this role requires a combination of technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and strong collaboration with various teams to maintain a robust and high-performing network infrastructure that supports the organization's goals. Primary management of the stability, integrity and efficient operation of the network and in-house information systems that support core organizational functions.

  • Configure, deploy, and manage Arista network switches to maintain an efficient and reliable network infrastructure using monitoring and alerting tools
  • Support the Aruba Wireless Network, including deploying new access points, configuring, and upgrading wireless controllers, and troubleshooting end-user issues
  • Oversee the maintenance of network cabling infrastructure and serving as the main point of contact for cabling contractors to ensure optimal performance.
  • Collaborate with UNIX/Storage, Desktop and Software Development teams to ensure network infrastructure supports their functions effectively
  • As a primary administrator of the Cisco Unified Communications platform, provision and deploy Cisco telephones, provide direct end-user support for Cisco telephones, create, and maintain dial plans and CUCM trunks. Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve VoIP communications failures and bottleneck
  • Monitor and maintain all network activity, responding to personal analysis as well as automated alerts to prevent and/or minimize network disruptions
  • Document and maintain the network and VoIP infrastructure

What you bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or related field (or equivalent education and experience)
  • Certifications: CCNA, CCNA Voice, CCNP Voice, CCNP Route and Switch or equivalent experience
  • 8+ years of industry experience in design and implementation of network devices
  • 8 + years of experience with Implementation and troubleshooting of Cisco VoIP solutions
  • Demonstrable experience working with high performance network switches (Arista or other fabric switches).
  • In-depth knowledge of OSI model, TCP/IP and routing protocols including, OSPF, RIP, BGP, ECMP
  • In-depth understanding of CoS / QoS techniques, latency, jitter, packet loss, and bandwidth utilization
  • Extensive understanding of general network security and firewall issues
  • Ability to learn and respond to demands in a fast-paced, highly technical environment
  • Effective written and oral communication, organizational, time management, and service delivery skills

We are open to the successful candidate being based at either our Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, VA or our Headquarters location in Chevy Chase, MD with occasional travel needed to both locations.

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. Compensation Range
$110,656.00 (minimum) - $138,320.00 (midpoint) - $179,816.00 (maximum)

Pay Type:
Annual

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
