Summary:

The Digital Media Specialist brings HHMI's work to life through creative, high-impact digital storytelling. Focusing on vertical video and dynamic visual design, this role develops engaging social media content that showcases the Institute's research, education initiatives, and support for scientists.

Working closely with the Director of Digital Media and Marketing, the Specialist also contributes to digital asset management and website content updates, ensuring HHMI's digital presence is consistent and impactful.

Collaboration is central to this role. The Specialist partners with the Social Media Manager to deliver content aligned with strategy, supports the Visual Media Producer in maintaining the Digital Asset Management (DAM) system, and works with the Web Manager to publish content across HHMI platforms. The role also involves close coordination with HHMI's sub-brands-Janelia, Tangled Bank Studios, and BioInteractive-as well as regular interaction with scientists, educators, communicators, and staff.

This role has a hybrid schedule of three days at HHMI's Headquarters in Chevy Chase, MD.

What you'll do:

Social Media Content

  • Develop creative, scientifically accurate social media content that engages HHMI audiences and advances account goals.
  • Design graphics and produce vertical video content (concept, production, editing).
  • Support campaign planning and logistics, from research to interviews.
  • Track trends, surface new ideas, and identify opportunities for cross-posting or creator collaborations.

Digital Asset & Web Support

  • Assist with uploading, tagging, and managing files in the Digital Asset Management (DAM) system.
  • Support website updates, content maintenance, and partner requests as needed.

What you bring:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least 5 years of experience creating social-media content for a brand or organization
  • Proficiency in graphic design, video editing, and major social media platforms; experience with CMS or DAM systems a plus.
  • Ability to translate complex topics for diverse audiences and adapt voice and tone across channels.
  • Strong time management with the ability to prioritize, multitask, and meet tight or competing deadlines.

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).

Compensation Range
$78,332.80 (minimum) - $97,916.00 (midpoint) - $127,290.80 (maximum)

Pay Type:
Annual

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal consistency when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
