Summary:

The Center Operations Director will be a strategic partner to the Vice President of the Center for the Advancement of Science Leadership and Culture. The person will navigate the operational components of and manage administrative operations for the Center in order to connect the people and the work to the vision and direction of the Center. They will do this by ensuring transparent flow and sharing of information within the Center and with its strategic partners. They will also coordinate office finances; be responsible for office systems and reporting; collaborate with the program directors; represent the Center on interdepartmental task forces on administrative matters; interact with business units across Headquarters and with each of the program areas within the department; and coordinate special projects.

The person in this role will report to HHMI's headquarters in Chevy Chase, Maryland three days a week. They will report directly to the Vice President of the Center for the Advancement of Science Leadership and Culture (aka the Center).

What you'll do:

  • In consultation with the Vice President, manage budgeting and financial reporting for the Center. This includes ensuring that the annual budget is prepared on a timely and accurate basis, that actual spending is monitored against budget and potential overspending is addressed or explained.
  • Create dashboards and implement other tools to centralize data for the Center including grants, external partnerships, and convenings.
  • Partner and effectively communicate with operations leaders in Science, Janelia, and OGC to facilitate shared alignments and goals.
  • Collaborate with Center program directors on operational matters and programmatic decisions to align with VP and overall strategic initiatives for Center.
  • Suggest workflow and process improvements within the Center and work with others to coordinate smooth implementation of agreed-upon improvements.
  • Represent the Center on interdepartmental task forces including the Center on Financial Operations Leadership Council (FOLC) and similar groups on administrative issues. They will be responsible for serving on various institutional working groups related to risk assessment, AI, and others as needed.
  • Be responsible for information technology (IT) systems and reporting for the department. This includes working closely with the Director of Data Analytics on the selection and implementation of new systems and upgrades or enhancements to those systems, in coordination with program directors and staff who use the systems and with HHMI's IT group.
  • Work closely with the Vice President and the Center leadership team on department-wide initiatives and planning long-term projects.
  • Organizes agendas for and, where appropriate, leads CASLC senior leadership team meetings in collaboration with VP of Science Leadership and Culture. Align topics, themes, and cadence from a strategic standpoint. Partner with Vice President and leadership team members to gather materials prior to each meeting, communicate purpose of each meeting and follow up meetings with concise next steps.
  • Work closely with Facilities and Conference Services to coordinate convenings, space needs, and related activities.
  • Work closely with P&C partners to coordinate Center hiring, promotions, and outlining goals and career development opportunities.
  • Develop team members by providing leadership, strategic support, motivation and mentoring to advance their growth and development.
  • Coordinate special projects, as required.

What you bring:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in business administration or other related field or a combination of education and related experience.
  • Minimum of 12 years of professional experience supporting business operations.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing people.
  • Experience managing budgets.
  • Data visualization software experience and dashboard creation, Tableau preferred.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills: proven ability to build rapport and constructive professional relationships.
  • Handle multiple matters simultaneously with ability to prioritize tasks appropriately work accurately and have strong attention to detail.
  • Able and willing to learn to handle new areas and projects as necessary.
  • Strong insight and judgment to identify when appropriate to advise Vice President of issues requiring attention.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret data and share key findings.
  • Adaptability and resourceful navigation of a matrixed and sometimes ambiguous work environment.
  • Seek ways to accomplish the functions of the department with higher quality and greater efficiency.
  • Excellent organizational, writing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Maintain knowledge of, and applies equitably and consistently, HHMI policies relevant to areas of substantive responsibility.
  • Maintain confidentiality of critical information handled by the Center.

Compensation Range
$147,035.20 (minimum) - $183,784.00 (midpoint) - $238,932.20 (maximum)

Pay Type:
Annual

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
