Mechanical CAD Engineer

2 weeks ago Chennai, India

The opportunity:

The Mechanical CAD Engineer is responsible for standardization, implementation, and maintenance of component libraries within the PLM environment. The role focuses on developing, managing, and enhancing standard reusable accessories and components for transformer products, enabling accurate user selection through metadata-driven CAD libraries and specification tools. The engineer will work closely with engineering, supply chain, and quality stakeholders to ensure harmonized, high-quality component data across global repositories.

How you'll make an impact:

  • Support the GPG engineering team in implementing, maintaining, and continuously improving standardized component and material libraries. Drive standardization of components, ensuring reuse, consistency, and compliance with global repository standards.
  • Analyze, harmonize, and classify materials and component libraries in accordance with GPG and PLM standards. Map local and regional standard parts to global specifications and validate all associated parameter values.
  • Migrate, cleanse, and consolidate legacy standards to establish and sustain a centralized repository for standard materials and parts.
  • Develop new specifications and modify existing ones for standard reusable accessories and components of transformer products within the PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) system. Enable and support accurate user selection of components (e.g., bushings) from CAD libraries using metadata, attributes, and specification/selection tools.
  • Design and implement CAD automation scripts, Pro/Program solutions, and tools to improve design efficiency and streamline engineering workflows. Create automated and rule-based design solutions to enhance productivity and reduce manual errors.
  • Manage daily operational requests and provide hands-on support to engineering users by ensuring correct classification groups and attribute selection for standard parts. Collaborate with Supply Chain and Supplier Quality teams to ensure correct mapping of global standard part specifications to supplier products.
  • Work closely with core team members to define and maintain classification structures and attributes for various categories of global standard parts. Coordinate with stakeholders across Engineering and Supply Chain Management (SCM) to support standardization and data governance initiatives.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Living Hitachi Energy's core values safety and integrity, which means taking responsibility for your own actions while caring for your colleagues and the business.

Your background:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field, with 3 to 5 years of relevant experience. Strong experience in component standardization, including creation, management, and reuse of standard parts and assemblies.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D CAD modeling tools, preferably Creo Parametric and Creo View. Proven ability to support metadata-driven component selection from CAD libraries and specification/selection tools (e.g., for bushings and other transformer components).
  • Skills in CAD automation, including Pro/Program development and related scripting techniques. Intermediate programming skills and exposure to automation or rule-based design methodologies.
  • Hands-on experience with PLM systems, preferably PTC Windchill. In-depth knowledge of international standards, including ISO, DIN, IEC, IEEE, and ANSI.
  • Strong analytical and data management skills, with experience in data cleansing, validation, and governance. Experience working with the Engineering Change Management (ECM) process.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with business stakeholders, product owners, developers, and end users across engineering, supply chain, and material planning domains.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within cross-functional and global teams. Detail-oriented and capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting project deadlines.
  • Proven ability to quickly learn and adapt to new engineering tools and processes. Desirable: Prior experience with transformer products or transformer accessories and components.
  • Proficiency in both spoken & written English language is required.
