Debate Specialist, High School, After-School Program

Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) - a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York - seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission aligned Debate Specialist at the Countee Cullen Community Center.

The Debate Specialist will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Children's Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.

The Debate Specialist will join our Countee Cullen team that provides a structured and engaging introduction to the active use of law and the American judicial system to our high school students. The ideal candidate will be able to expose students to current law issues through a designed curriculum and through a series of Mock trials designed by the specialist. The Debate Specialist must be able to motivate and maintain the interest of students while setting a positive example. Additionally, the debate specialist must take a sincere, active, and appropriate interest in the well-being and success of all students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A commitment to the mission and programs of HCZ
  • 1 year of experience working in youth development; Bachelor's degree preferred

Who You Are

  • Create lesson plans centered around developing student debate skills.
  • Ability to develop students debating skills and understanding of the law.
  • Patient, motivated, well organized, with exceptional communication skills.
  • Help students articulate their speech when discussing law.
  • Encourage student growth through effective lesson planning.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings

What You'll Do

  • Engage a group of 15-20 high school students in a curriculum
  • Encourage a greater understanding of the American legal system, court proceedings, and judicial system.
  • Develop a student's understanding, critical thinking skills, speech, and advocacy.
  • Design curriculum based on enhancing the student's debating skills, awareness of how the law works, and current legal issues.
  • Supervise students' understanding during a mock trial session.
  • Design a curriculum to introduce students to law and how it can be applied during court proceedings.
  • Coordinate trips, special events, student showcases, and other activities based on law and the American legal system.
  • Create mock trials centered around real and current issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Schedule

  • Monday through Friday, 4p - 8p
