Hachette Book Group (HBG) is seeking a strategic, results-driven Associate Director or Director of Sales Analytics to join our high-performing Sales team. This pivotal role will lead the development and execution of data-driven insights to inform sales strategies, shape publishing decisions, and drive revenue growth across our portfolio of bestselling titles and acclaimed authors.
The ideal candidate is equal parts analyst and storyteller—someone who can translate complex datasets into compelling narratives and actionable strategies. This individual will collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Marketing, Editorial, and Executive leadership to surface trends, optimize sales performance, and shape future opportunities in a rapidly evolving marketplace.

Key Responsibilities
Data Analysis & Market Reporting
- Develop and maintain regular reporting on sales performance, preorders, and retail trends across formats and accounts.
- Monitor macro and micro shifts in the publishing landscape—analyzing customer behavior, competitor performance, category movement, and industry data.
- Create in-depth market intelligence reports and title-level analyses that inform strategic decision-making across departments.
- Build and distribute recurring dashboards and ad hoc reports that offer meaningful insights at the author, imprint, and category level.
- Partner with internal teams to spotlight emerging sales opportunities and growth areas, from frontlist breakouts to evergreen backlist performers.
Strategic Business Planning
- Support annual and seasonal business planning by providing robust historical analysis and forward-looking trend forecasting.
- Track and contextualize performance of key authors and tentpole titles, identifying patterns to inform future publishing and promotional strategies.
- Partner with Marketing and Sales Directors on tailored reporting and performance tracking for high-visibility campaigns and brand authors.
- Help refine pricing, positioning, and inventory strategies through data-informed recommendations.
Communication & Cross-Functional Leadership
- Present key findings and strategic recommendations to Sales leadership, imprints, and company-wide stakeholders.
- Play a key role in sales conference prep, crafting compelling narratives that synthesize data into clear, strategic takeaways.
- Collaborate with Corporate Marketing and Publishing Operations to ensure alignment in data sources, tools, and reporting cadence.
- Serve as a thought partner to Sales Directors and National Account Managers, equipping them with the tools and context to make informed decisions.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5–7 years of experience in publishing, consumer analytics, business intelligence, or a related field
- Proven ability to extract insights from complex data sets and translate them into strategic actions
- Highly proficient in Excel (including pivot tables, lookups, and complex formulas); familiarity with SQL, Tableau, or other BI tools a plus
- Strong presentation and storytelling skills; must be comfortable synthesizing data into clean, visually engaging PowerPoint decks
- Demonstrated success in collaborating across departments and presenting to senior leadership
- Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
- A curious, proactive, and business-oriented mindset with a passion for books and market trends
- Comfortable working independently and driving projects forward in a hybrid work environment
