Compensation:

The anticipated base pay compensation range for this position is $131,200.00 to $218,700.00.

Position Details:

You will join the Grainger Technology Group (GTG) in the department of Product Engineering. GTG builds powerful digital capabilities and advances technology-driven outcomes. You will focus delivering compelling, value-added MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Operations) solutions by investing in three core areas: Team Member Tools, Information Assets, and Customer Experiences. These areas are built and improved through cycles of experimentation and innovation

As a Staff Engineer within the Customer Order Channels domain, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the user experience and building scalable, high-performance applications that enhance customer visibility into their order lifecycle. You'll partner with cross-functional stakeholders to build, evolve, and modernize Grainger's digital experience with a focus on quality, performance, and maintainability.

This is a hands-on role requiring deep expertise in React, Next.js, TypeScript, and modern UI practices-combined with strong technical leadership, mentoring, and collaboration skills.

You Will:

  • Design and develop responsive, accessible, and performant UI applications using React, Next.js, and TypeScript.
  • Drive complex technical initiatives in partnership with Architects, contributing to Architectural Decision Records (ADRs).
  • Partner closely with UX, Product Management, and backend engineers/teams to build cohesive and user-centric features.
  • Mentor and elevate engineers through technical deep-dives, design reviews, and code walkthroughs.
  • Drive continuous delivery practices by improving CI/CD pipelines, test strategies, and build automation.
  • Instrument applications for performance and proactively address tech improvements and system health.
  • Advocate for and implement best practices in front-end engineering, including component reusability, separation of concerns, and performance optimization.
  • Champion Grainger's strong engineering culture by modeling sensible defaults:
    • Lead by example in delivering small, iterative stories using trunk-based development.
    • Foster a culture of pairing, shared ownership of quality, and test-driven development (TDD).
    • Promote fast builds, automated deployments, and production-ready code with built-in observability, resilience and security.

You Have:

  • 7+ years of professional experience in software engineering with a strong focus on front-end development.
  • Expert-level proficiency in React, Next.js, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML5, and CSS3.
  • Experience building component-based architectures and working with mono-repo setups.
  • Proven ability to drive engineering quality through unit testing, shared ownership, and clean code practices, using tools like Jest, WebDriverIO, ESLint, and Prettier.
  • Experience collaborating across teams to implement observability standards that support production readiness, faster debugging, and proactive system health monitoring using tools like DataDog, Splunk etc.,
  • Familiarity with backend-for-frontend (BFF) concepts or partnering with Node.js backend APIs.
  • Hands-on experience in CI/CD environments (e.g., GitHub Actions), with strong understanding of deployment pipelines and version control workflows (GitHub).
  • Demonstrated success in leading front-end modernization efforts and shaping cross-team technical strategies.
  • Passion for user experience and attention to detail in design execution.

Preffered:

  • Experience working with Design Systems or leading internal UI libraries.
  • Exposure to micro-frontends or federated modules.
  • Cloud platform experience (AWS) and containerization basics (Docker, Kubernetes).
