OUR IMPACT

We work at the intersection of finance and law, providing counsel and advice that support activities across the firm. Prior experience covering cash equities trading desks is not a prerequisite for the role. A good foundation in capital markets transactions and/or regulatory advisory work, combined with an enthusiasm and openness to learn will stand any candidate in good stead. You will cover a dynamic and innovative business, with the opportunity to cover different trading channels and markets across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). You will work with multiple stakeholders, including other lawyers in the EMEA cash equities team, as well as the wider legal division, sales and trading businesses, compliance, internal audit and operations. As a global financial institution, Goldman Sachs provides the opportunity to work with colleagues in multiple locations across the globe, including Europe, the U.S., the Middle East and Asia.

The role sits within a team of six lawyers, split between London and Warsaw, covering the EMEA equities sales and trading desks within GBM Public, including electronic trading, exchange traded funds (ETFs), our multilateral trading facility (MTF) and emerging markets sales and trading teams.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Advising on the legal and regulatory framework for the sales and trading businesses, including market abuse considerations, MiFID II trade and transaction reporting, settlement discipline regimes (including buy-ins), short selling issues, position reporting and trading venue requirements
  • Drafting and negotiating terms of business for trading, broker agreements, commission sharing agreements, authorised participant agreements and other associated trading documents
  • Advising on the practical impact of legal and regulatory developments for our emerging markets desk, as well as the legal implications of carrying out business in new markets (liaising with local counsel as necessary)
  • Advising our electronic trading businesses on the legal and regulatory aspects of algorithmic trading, direct electronic access and connectivity to trading venues
  • Monitoring and advising on the impact of regulatory and market developments, including contributing to advocacy at a firm level to help shape and inform evolving regulation of the businesses we cover

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 3 years post qualification experience in a law firm or in-house, with experience covering sales and trading businesses helpful but not essential
  • Qualification as a lawyer, preferably in the EU or the UK (or similar)
  • A basic understanding and/or interest in the operation of capital markets. A working knowledge of MiFID II, Market Abuse Regulation (MAR) and/or the Short Selling Regulation (SSR) would be helpful
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Dynamic approach, with an intellectual curiosity that will enable you to develop within the role and effectively identify legal issues and/or risk
  • Team oriented, with the ability to work within a collegiate environment with multiple stakeholders across different locations
  • Ability to prioritise work effectively, be pro-active in a challenging business environment and to respond to client demands in a timely manner
