RESPONSIBILITIES

  • About the role:

    GM Financial is targeting significant growth as it transforms the Protection/Insurance Products into a full captive platform. Our team is responsible for bringing the branded General Motors F&I products to market and we work hands on with our dealer partners to improve performance in their F&I department. To provide the most competitive products and business insights, we are building advanced data and analytics capabilities.

    The Lead DataScientist will play a critical role in advancing data science solutions that drive marketing effectiveness and optimize claims management for GM Protection. This position will lead the end-to-end design, development, deployment, and maintenance of advanced analytical and AI-driven systems, ensuring robust, scalable, and production-ready solutions. As a senior technical expert, you will guide projects from concept to production, embedding automation and engineering rigor into workflows to enable continuous integration and reliable delivery. The role demands deep expertise in quantitative methods, strong knowledge of data ecosystems and modern tooling, and a commitment to engineering excellence through code quality, peer reviews, and best practices. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to translate business objectives into actionable solutions, mentor other data scientists, and champion innovation and operational discipline across the data science lifecycle.

    In this role you will:

    • Provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to data science team
    • Lead the design, development and deployment of advanced mathematical and AI/ML solutions, including NLP and LLM-based systems.
    • Apply advanced analytics to uncover patterns, detect anomalies, and model sequential behaviors in complex datasets.
    • Drive engineering excellence through code reviews, quality standards, and mentoring across the data science team.
    • Establish monitoring frameworks for model performance, drift detection, and continuous improvement.
    • Ensure delivered products meet key business metrics, collaborate with partners to translate objectives into actionable solutions, and advise leadership on strategic use of analytics.
    • Seek needed information and conduct research projects from design through analysis, summarizing findings and communicating insights, recommendations and implications to senior leadership.
    • Prioritize effectively and deliver results within deadlines in a fast-paced environment.


QUALIFICATIONS

What makes you an ideal candidate?

  • Strong quantitative, analytical and data interpretation skills with a solid foundation of mathematics, probability, and statistics
  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated understanding of applied methodologies including least squares regression, logistic regression, sampling methodologies, time series, survival analysis, cluster analysis, categorical data analysis, decision trees, multivariate methodologies, non-parametric techniques, principal components, and linear programming techniques as well as hands-on experience with NLP, LLMs, and Agentic RAG-based solutions
  • Advanced skills and proficiency in Python, SAS, SQL
  • Ability to design and implement model deployment, documentation and monitoring protocols
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience with data engineering, and data analysis techniques in cloud environments (Azure/Databricks/AWS/GCP)
  • Strong written and verbal presentation skills with an ability to communicate effectively with Senior Management by making complex concepts easy to understand
  • Ability to be curious, ask questions, explore, and be creative when analyzing data and business problems
  • Ability to interact collaboratively with internal and external customers
  • Capable of managing multiple and varied projects, including the ability to coordinate and balance numerous tasks in a time-sensitive environment, under pressure
  • Domain experience in automotive, telematics, warranty and claim operations

Experience and Education

  • 5-7 years in related field or function required
  • Experience leading through mentorship in related field preferred
  • Experience leading projects and initiatives through influence preferred
    • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Master's Degree or PhD in Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or similar quantitative field required (a combination of education, certifications, and/or work experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree)
