Job Description Summary

This role contributes to company objectives in the fields of thermal-mechanical analysis and methods. It integrates and develops thermal-mechanical software, application methodologies, and supporting processes that are subsequently used to meet business needs across the organization. Specifically, this includes new product development and reload engineering work, the development and qualification of computational software, code benchmarking to post-irradiation measurements, licensing activities, and developing interfaces with other engineering organizations.

The technical leader will work within the Fuels & Digital Engineering organization to support all business units within Global Nuclear Fuels (GNF)/GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH). The role involves leading engineers in developing models and methods for thermal-mechanical analysis of existing and new BWR fuel products and reactors. The technical leader will also plan, assign and manage resources for the team and provide coaching/mentoring to less experienced team members.

This role is within the Thermal & Fluid Analysis (TFA) team, which is responsible for fuel performance calculations to establish and confirm that fuel product design limits, such as fuel temperature and cladding hermeticity, are met throughout the fuel product's lifetime. Codes are developed within the group to model changes in fuel material behavior using test data from both commercial reactors and experimental test reactors. The models and methods that are developed are licensed and applied to existing and new BWRs. The group also supports fuel manufacturing to review the impacts of factory modifications or deviations from standard processes, as well as supporting material development to improve fuel product performance.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to the functional manager to plan, assign, and manage resources and schedules within the TFA team.
  • Provide technical leadership for fuel thermal-mechanical analysis and methodologies within the TFA team.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with teams and commercial leaders within the broader Engineering organization to understand upcoming work demands and provide inputs on team capability and availability.
  • Perform manager review and approval of engineering technical deliverables for GNF/GVH customers.
  • Work with project managers and commercial program managers to provide work planning, scheduling, and technical support for customer deliverables.
  • Advocate for, and lead, team process improvements to drive speed and simplification.
  • Ensure work is performed with high quality in accordance with licensing regulations, customer requirements, and business quality assurance standards.
  • Drive a team culture based on teamwork, integrity, candor, transparency, and execution on commitments by providing constructive coaching feedback to employees.
  • Effectively communicate and coordinate activities with other team members on engineering/technical issues.
  • Responsible for leading the technical development including gamma scan equipment, fuel performance code development, and the development of methods interfacing with reload applications.
  • Work with manufacturing to resolve factory issues.
  • Work with national labs to design experiments and determine requirements for experimental programs.
  • Work within an approved regulatory framework for nuclear software quality assurance for engineering computer programs.
  • Prepare, document and present technical data to internal and external customers.
  • Support teams working in various time zones globally.
  • Support the interface with various regulatory agencies (NRC, CNSC, etc.) as appropriate.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited university or college in nuclear engineering, physics, mathematics, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Ten or more years of cumulative engineering experience.
  • 7 years of nuclear industry experience with project management and resource allocation.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The preferred work locations is the Wilmington, NC Headquarters but highly qualified remote candidates will be considered.
  • This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. If applicable, final offers will be contingent on ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Working knowledge of project scheduling software such as P6 Primavera.
  • Prior experience with thermal-mechanical methods and models (e.g., PRIME, FAST, Bison, or other fuel vendor codes).
  • Experience with fuel test programs such as commercial LTAs or testing conducted at national labs.
  • Experience with software quality assurance such as NQA-1.
  • Programming experience with Fortran and Python.
  • Experience working in GitLab or similar environment.
  • Experience with developing licensing topical reports for fuel performance models and methods.
  • Experience with core reload analyses for BWRs.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions with speed and accuracy based on the best available information.
  • Exceptional organization skills.
  • Legacy of delivering on commitments; tenacious, with a proven track record of overcoming obstacles; ability to achieve stretch targets.
  • Strong external focus; clear and demonstrated understanding of nuclear industry and/or energy industry.

The base pay range for this position is $111,000 to $160,000. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for bonuses, such as a performance bonus/variable incentive compensation/equity. This position is expected to close on Friday June 27th

The company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120%, or 130% of salary in certain areas.
