You will collaborate with design teams, cross-functional teams, and other designated experts across Controls to achieve desired outcomes, sometimes executing the work yourself. You will mentor and develop engineering talent, creating technical depth within the Operability domain.

Job Description

As Technical Leader (TL), Operational Controls, you will be responsible to design, implement, test and validate critical turbine control features related to the operational controls of the wind turbine working individually and with a team of controls engineers. The areas associated with Operational Controls includes defining the scheduling of internal controller set points, supervisory control functions, state machine, braking functions, and yaw control.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to the design teams involved in Operational controls in Operability within the OneWind engineering team across all stages of the project lifecycle, spanning from conceptualization and design development to product launch and ongoing fleet operations.
  • Accountable for overall technical design and quality in the areas of Operational Controls and the output of the Operational controls team.
  • Participate in and lead the development and enhancement of control algorithms that increase turbine performance, lower mechanical loading of the turbine, meet grid compliance requirements and at the same time allow the turbine to run with high availability.
  • Implement and validate control algorithms in both the loads simulation environment as well as on the GE MarkVIe PLC according to the product requirements flow-down
  • Investigate and analyze complex controls issues occurring in the fleet of installed turbines and develop corrective actions.
  • Provide key wind turbine controls expertise through all phases of product development from requirements definition through design and development, validation and product life-cycle support
  • Support quality issue resolution and root cause analysis related with Controls SW.
  • Prepare technical reporting and presentations for internal and external purpose, including design reviews and customer meetings.

Qualifications:

  • BSc/MSc in Engineering or Science from an accredited University.
  • Significant experience in Wind Turbine product.
  • Significant experience in Controls SW development and algorithm development.
  • Effective time management and rigorous organization of work.
  • Ability to work with multi-cultural and globally distributed team.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Advanced degree (MSc, PhD) with a focus on controls, wind energy, or system dynamics
  • Major experience in Wind Turbine product.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex/technical information orally and in writing
  • In-depth understanding of Wind Turbine design processes and the Onshore Wind NPI process.
  • Demonstrated project management experience and skills
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute multiple concurrent projects.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to succeed in a global team environment.
  • Good understanding of classical (transfer functions, frequency domain design, etc) and modern (state-space, optimal control, etc) control theory
  • Experience with Model-Based design of control systems
  • Experience with state estimation techniques (e.g. EKF)
  • Proficiency in Matlab/Simulink or similar program
  • Experience with real-time control systems such as the GE MarkVIe
  • Experience with the grid market including renewable integration and required services
  • Track record of filing Invention Disclosure Letters and patent applications
  • Track record of creating, improving, and maintaining design processes to improve quality.
