Job Description Summary

Become part of a winning team and help to deliver the Green Energy transition.

Job Description

As a Lead Control Systems Engineer, you will report to the Control Systems Manager and be part of a highly motivated and dynamic team working on the system requirements, design, and performance verification of Control and Protection functions for LCC and VSC HVDC schemes. This role is technically challenging, involving a variety of engineering disciplines, teamwork, and innovative approaches.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, implementation, and verification of HVDC Control and Protection systems, with a strong focus on engineering design - not just testing or validation.
  • Model DC systems, AC network equivalents, and renewable systems (wind parks, solar PV, etc.) in PSCAD; convert or model AC network equivalents in RSCAD; and interface with control contract equipment to validate control and protection systems.
  • Support the business in Tendering, Operations, Contractual, and After Sales activities, including:

- Renewable AC network (solar, wind parks) modelling and validation in PSCAD and RSCAD
- Conversion of PSS/E AC networks to PSCAD models
  • Play a key role in engineering design reviews and provide technical leadership, identifying potential project risks and technical weaknesses, and proposing safe, reliable, and compliant solutions.
  • Ensure project plans include all necessary activities and studies to meet customer and technical requirements, and that technical risks are identified and mitigated according to plan.
  • Support improvements to existing algorithms and strategies for power fault recovery or instability issues during dynamic performance studies.
  • Support the development of new strategies for control, protection, and sequencing (start-up/shut down) to meet customer technical specifications.
  • Contribute to continual improvement by introducing new tools, methods, and process improvements, and coordinate with Continuous Improvement leaders.
  • Promote a standard product methodology, seeking opportunities to re-use solutions, improve quality and reliability, and reduce delivery timelines and costs.
  • Foster collaboration across projects and ensure Return of Experience is incorporated.

  • Qualifications / Essential Requirements

    • Engineering degree or equivalent (including power systems and power electronics), or proven equivalent knowledge and experience in the HVDC business.
    • Demonstrated experience in HVDC control and protection system design, implementation, and verification (not just validation or commissioning), with a strong sense of urgency and ability to identify and manage technical risks.
    • Excellent communication and client engagement skills: Strong written and verbal communication in English, with experience creating and presenting technical reports, responding to client questions, understanding and communicating customer requirements, and leading technical discussions.
    • Technical expertise in power systems: Solid understanding of functional characteristics and interactions between AC and HVDC systems; knowledge of HVDC control, protection, and sequencing strategies.
    • Hands-on proficiency with simulation tools: Practical experience using PSCAD and RSCAD for system modeling and analysis.
    • Results-driven and adaptable: Able to work to deadlines under pressure while maintaining safety, quality, and engineering integrity; flexible with working hours and willing to travel globally to support projects.

    Alternative Experience

If you do not have direct HVDC experience, we also welcome candidates with strong backgrounds in:

    • Power system studies, including dynamic performance analysis
    • Experience with PSCAD or similar simulation tools
    • System analysis to evaluate and understand system behavior (including RMS and EMT studies, grid code compliance, and network stability analysis)
    • Application areas such as wind farm integration, HVDC VSC systems, or LLC systems

    Desired Characteristics

    • Process improvement or Root Cause Analysis (RCA) experience or certification
    • Ability to define requirements and ensure adherence to best practices
    • Experienced in technical leadership
    • Previous experience working in the HVDC industry

    What We Offer
