Lead engineer is responsible to deliver Automation & Control Engineering Solutions for SA projects up to 765kV in accordance with customer specification and our technical offer

Lead engineer is the technical guarantor of the proper performance of basic / detailed design within the customer delivery requirement, design budget (man days) and Quality thereby promoting the ease of installation and commissioning of the system in line with Customer expectation

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Perform Job study for Automation projects. Establish, based on tender, project strategy and delivery schedule, the conceptual DCS design, list of deliverables and finalize project Bill of Materials / budget man-days. Update risk assessment related to design & apply mitigation plan when required
  • Prepare and release Technical Design drawings, documents, Engineering Calculations and DCS configurations. Select and finalize IEDs, Bought-on-Job materials and raise purchase requisition to meet the delivery schedule. Explore cost optimization in all design phases.
  • Perform design reviews. Attend Customer technical meetings and prepare compliance to customer observation / comments to secure approvals. Comply with Quality Procedures, work instructions and process
  • Co-ordinate with various stakeholders including Testing team and participate in Factory inspection plan (FAT) to ensure successful closure of open points. Provide support to the site team to resolve technical issues and raise snag lists. Manage technical interface with suppliers & partners
  • Lead and guide project team members. Perform and validate Integration of IEDs in various protocols, troubleshooting of SAS systems. Share Return of Experience and implement the applicable RoEs in project design. Co-ordinate with Product Line for closure of technical issues.
  • Adhere to all safe working procedures in accordance with EHS instructions. Demonstrate commitment to safety through active participation
  • Analyze customer technical requirements and represent customer interests to the Growth leader in finalizing design decisions
  • In-depth understanding of key business drivers to accomplish own work; In-depth understanding of how work of own team integrates with other teams and contributes to the overall team.
  • Ensure Quality on-time delivery of design to stakeholders. Track execution progress. Anticipate and mitigate delivery issues and implement change. Manage design time spent in man hours on relevant activities.
  • Participate with Project Management and finalize technical and cost impact. Identity additional scope / work and support for Variation Order (VO) claim.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Electrical & Electronics) or (Electrical)

  • 8-10 years of hands-on experience in independently managing the design, testing, and troubleshooting of Substation Automation Systems (SAS).
  • Extensive knowledge of Substation Automation technologies, including:
    • Communication protocols: IEC 61850, Modbus, IEC 103, IEC 104
    • Networking & VLAN concepts and communication architecture
    • Database configuration and IED integration
    • System testing and validation
  • Familiarity with Cybersecurity standards and configuration practices relevant to SAS environments.
  • Working knowledge of protection systems and commissioning processes for SAS (considered an added advantage).
  • Understanding of utility-specific standards and practices, with experience adapting solutions to meet diverse customer requirements.
  • Proficient in project organization and engineering workflows, ensuring efficient execution and delivery.
  • Skilled in DCS troubleshooting tools, enabling effective diagnostics and resolution of system issues.
