As a Lead Cooling System Engineer you will report to the Valve Cooling Team Leader within the HVDC Valves Engineering Department.

As the successful candidate, you will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic and rapidly growing team of engineers working on the development of cooling systems for new power electronics applications for HVDC converters and the forthcoming HVDC Grid.

The Cooling System Engineer role covers the mechanical, instrumentation, and control design of the pure-water cooling systems for HVDC converter valves.

This role gives an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to innovate, expand their design skill and personal development within an internationally recognised expert in this exciting field.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Perform technical evaluation of HVDC cooling systems supplier's proposals and documentation.
  • Pure-water cooling system scheme design for HVDC & FACTs.
  • P&ID and Flow diagram preparation.
  • cooling plant 3D models review and approval.
  • Review of mechanical drawings which includes pump unit general arrangement, treatment unit general arrangement, cooling room layout, coolers layout, pipe routing, civil guide drawings, and support structure guide drawings.
  • Preliminary equipment sizing using calculation tools.
  • Review of installation drawings.
  • Equipment sizing, specification, calculation and approval.
  • Instrumentation specification and approval.
  • Review of spare part list, special tool list, commissioning spare part list for pure-water cooling systems.
  • Review of operation and maintenance manual.
  • Pure-water cooling system testing supervision, revision and approval.
  • Pure-water cooling system installation supervision.
  • Pure-water cooling system commissioning.
  • Perform RAM studies.
  • Compile DFMEA and design document and know how to apply PFMEA.
  • Decisive in addressing technical hurdles and maintaining performance.
  • Review and approve the drawings and design documentation when required.
  • Ability to undertake deep technical reviews of technology with engineering experts.
  • Innovation on new technical ideas for patent applications.
  • Work closely with sourcing and procurement for cooling system suppliers selection.
  • Integration with other departments (engineering, manufacturing, S&P, SQA) for product development and support tendering and project delivery.
  • Actively broadening and deepening HVDC cooling system knowledge and share specialised expertise to other engineers.
  • Familiarity with REACH compliance and environmental impact of their work.
  • Strick adherence to GE Zero Deviation policy and promote EHS within the team.
  • Occasional international travel for testing supervising, suppliers visit and internal meetings.

The Person:

  • The candidate will probably be educated to degree level or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering or Chemical Engineering.
  • Candidates should have proven experience of the design and/or development of the liquid cooling systems (ideally for power electronics applications).
  • It is key that the candidate has the ability to work quickly and efficiently within an engineering team.
  • In addition to relevant experience, an enquiring mind and desire to learn new skills together with an ability to motivate and engage the cooling system engineering team are essential qualities.

Skills and Experience:

  • The person will have proven experience in cooling systems, knowledge of heat dissipation and heat transfer, fluid dynamics, hydraulics, component design and selection, piping design, control system specification, instrumentation specification and selection.
  • Proven ability in product design, validation and industrialisation.
  • Design for X (DFX) (e.g. manufacturing, cost, size, weight, efficiency, performance, test, maintenance).
  • Simulation tools such as Matlab-Simulink, Ansys.
  • Ability to prepare P&ID drawings is essential and the ability to use 2D drawing packages to prepare GA and layout drawings is desirable.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • A good working knowledge of /ability to use a 3D drawing package (PTC Creo) is also desirable.
  • Specification & report writing, reviewing and approval.
  • Design & type testing programmes.
  • Ability to interact with other engineering disciplines and good at sharing knowledge.
  • EHS compliance ability.

Advantageous Experience:

  • Knowledge / understanding of pure water cooling of high-power and high-voltage design and control issues.
  • Prior experience of supplier chain integration (e.g. technical communication, clause-by-clause review, production line audit).
  • Intellectual property and the patent process experience.
  • Ability to coordinate and lead a small group of engineers.

  • Able to work to deadlines with high quality.
