Job Description

As a Control Automation System Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting the requirements, design, implementation, and development of digital control systems for HVDC Control & Protection. You'll collaborate across engineering disciplines within the HVDC business and work closely with Solution and Engineering Centers (NPI, ITO, OTR, and Product Care) to deliver robust solutions that meet project and tender objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Support: Assist in delivering technical solutions to meet customer requirements based on reference solutions.
  • System Development: Support requirements, design, implementation, and testing of digital control systems for HVDC Control & Protection, including network and cybersecurity considerations.
  • Integration & Configuration:

    • Help configure IEC61850 IEDs using vendor-specific tools and system configuration tools for system integration.
    • Assist in generating Substation Configuration Description Language (SCL) files for system integration.
    • Support the design, configuration, and testing of HVDC Control System hardware to deliver on time and within budget.
    • Participate in testing and debugging of IEC61850 communication systems using industry-standard tools (IEDScout, Wireshark, etc.).
  • System Coordination:

    • Help coordinate and interface the HVDC Control System with Balance of Plant equipment and SCADA systems.
    • Assist in defining main IO lists for the control system and analyzing signal interfaces for compatibility.
  • Digital Substation Environments:

    • Support configuration of Remote Terminal Units (RTU), Bay Controllers (BCU), and Merging Units for signal acquisition in digital substations.
    • Assist in designing LAN networks/communication architectures and configuring industrial Ethernet switches, routers, and satellite clocks.
  • Design & Documentation:

    • Follow department standard design practices, engineering reviews, and guidelines.
    • Support the creation of control panel requirements and detailed design documentation using standard design blocks.
    • Help prepare panel electrical schematics (using Engineering Base tool), wire/cable schedules, routine test specifications, general assembly drawings, and bills of materials.
  • Testing & Commissioning:

    • Participate in testing and FAT witnessing of the Control System.
    • Support site activities for installation and commissioning.
  • Technical Communication: Help prepare and present technical information on Substation Control Systems to internal and external customers.
  • Quality Assurance: Assist in ensuring proper documentation of technical data and deliver high-quality results on time and within targeted cost.
  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute to product improvement in terms of delivery speed, stability, and reliability.

Required Qualifications

  • Degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Solid background in configuring Substation Bay Controllers, Merging Units, and IEC61850 IEDs.
  • Experience in control and protection system design.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication networks (IEC61850, Ethernet-based protocols).
  • Experience with control & protection relay logic design techniques.
  • Experience developing electrical designs for industrial control systems.
  • Knowledge of communication network security/hardening and cybersecurity best practices.
  • Good knowledge of Layer 2 & 3 protocols (IPv4, OSPF, LACP, DMZ, VPN, DMS/ADMS, DNP, IEC, Modbus).
  • Experience with electrical power systems, substation automation engineering, and digital control systems.
