The BWRX-300 Firstline Engineering Manager - Plant Instrumentation, Controls and Electrical (ICE) Digital Systems, Cyber Security, and Design Processes will provide leadership to a diverse technical team of dedicated engineers and experts responsible for the requirements management, architecture, design, implementation, integration, test, with rigorous digital systems, software, IT networks, and cyber security quality assurance governance as well as technical oversight of site installation and commissioning of the protection, control, and monitoring equipment. The team will include an evolving global mix of employees and contractors plus engineering services sub-contractors of specific managed task work packages. The team will be responsible for complete first of a kind (FOAK) standard plant design product and customer site specific design projects lifecycle stewardship of the solution including selecting, procuring, and complete systems integration of all implementing platforms, equipment, and components.

The scope includes; 1) Digital Systems and Software Process Engineering (DS&SPE), 2) Plant Cyber Security Program, and 3) Design Processes. This scope compliments and supports both Plant I&C Systems and Electrical Systems Design teams from Conceptual thru Preliminary to Detailed Design Engineering Phases as well as Implementation in Procurement and Construction Phases of each customers' site specific design Engineer - Procure - Construct (EPC) projects. The scope includes all reactor protection and associated plant control and monitoring systems and components that are designated Safety Class 1 (SC1) [US NRC Safety-Related] plus SC2 and SC3 [US NRC Augmented Quality], and Safety Class None (SCN) [i.e.; US NRC NonSafety-Related].

The standard plant wide protection, control, and monitoring system-of-systems architecture and design as well as implementing digital and cyber security lifecycle processes are based on the applicable nuclear IEC Standards while enveloping specific complimentary supporting CSA and IEEE Standards. This is a leadership position that contributes to the overall strategy of the business and manages complex issues within the plant systems design including nuclear (NI) and turbine island (TI) with its' associated balance of plant (BOP).

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Report to the Senior Engineering Manager, Plant Instrumentation, Controls, and Electric Power Systems.
  • Have ownership and accountability for the identification, definition, functional, plus design, development, and implementation or fulfillment process requirements for digital systems and component [i.e.; smart digital devices] software as well as the cyber security program process requirements for all types of plant protection, control, and monitoring systems, components, and equipment.
  • Ensure that design, test, and procurement specifications, plans, procedures, and reports for systems, components, and equipment adequately address the DS&SPE and Cyber Security requirements.
  • Have ownership and accountability for overall design processes [e.g.; standard work] program in a rigorous systems engineering and requirements management environment including the identification, provisioning, configuration, library management, and deployment of the Disciplines' specific design and analysis tools.
  • Have ownership and accountability for the execution of work activities and design reviews with assessment reports, risk mitigation action plans, and focused design and procurement requirements.
  • Provide technical and managerial leadership for a diverse team by inspiring, coaching, challenging, and developing their knowledge, skills, and experience or competency depth and breadth.
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationship with other internal engineering teams, product management, project management, sourcing, quality, finance, and other cross- functional leadership and individual stakeholders.
  • Interface with external suppliers, partners, customers, and applicable country specific regulatory agencies, as required on technical issues.
  • Identify, organize, plan, schedule, and work products then manage the activities or tasks and their assigned resources to ensure engineering deliverables are on-spec, on-budget, and on-schedule in accordance with contract requirements, business or project procedures, industry standards, and regulatory agency guidelines.
  • Provide guidance and manage external resources to ensure the quality of deliverables, enable flexibility, and improved engineering labor budget cost positions.
  • Support commercial and marketing opportunities to develop new business opportunities.
  • Protect GEH's intellectual property rights, trade secrets, and related know-how.
  • Support GEH initiatives related to; LEAN, simplification, process improvement, Design To Cost (DTC), and Value Engineering (VE).
  • Support GEH Nuclear Energy quality requirements, including participation in design reviews, initiating, and responding to Corrective Actions.
  • Ensure adherence to GEH's standards for nuclear safety, security, integrity, and compliance.
  • Partner with business teams and present multi- generational product plans (MGPP) or program strategies, multi- generational technical development plans (MGTDP) or roadmaps, risks mitigation plans, and recommendations to improve our competitiveness.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related Science or technical discipline.
  • At least 15 years of progressive experience in protection, controls, and monitoring engineering design and related project implementation nor fulfillment leadership experience with large, complex digital systems in the nuclear, power, or other heavy industry [e.g.; oil & gas, refining].

Desired Qualifications:

  • Licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • At least 8 years of experience in the nuclear power industry, US Department of Energy (DOE) test lab facilities, US Nuclear Navy reactor power plant design and construction, or equivalent complex, large scale new build experience in the power industry.
  • Deep knowledge, skill, and experience in several areas involving; instrumentation, protection, control, monitoring, IEC Standards based digital systems and software process engineering and related plant-wide cyber security, engineering design, analysis, modeling, and simulation tools.
  • Knowledge and experience with various design, analysis, modeling, and simulation software tools used for plant design.
  • Understanding of multi- disciplinary and complex systems of systems.
  • Proven ability to be a liaison between organizations that are operating in separate geographic locations.
  • High performing individual with demonstrated ability to deliver results while exhibiting behaviors that promote strong team performance.
  • Proven interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to think strategically, be creative and move quickly.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team of highly experienced engineers and balance multiple demands and priorities.

  • Experience with project management skillset including; communication, risk, work planning, scheduling, change management.
  • EPC experience and knowledge; specifically, power plant.
  • Understanding of nuclear industry and technology.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to document, plan, market and manage programs that further the knowledge, understanding and capability of the business.
