As a Lead Vision Engineer at Orion Assembly, you will serve as the technical lead for vision-based automation systems, with a primary focus on bin picking technology. You will be responsible for integrating, validating, and optimizing multiple bin-picking camera systems across the Body Shop, ensuring they meet GM standards and support robust manufacturing processes.
This role is critical to both launch execution and long-term system reliability. You will leverage lessons learned from other GM sites currently executing bin picking to drive best practices and avoid common pitfalls. Working closely with controls, robotics, and manufacturing teams, you will ensure vision systems are seamlessly integrated into production workflows. Your leadership will directly impact cycle time, pick accuracy, and system uptime, while mentoring technical talent and building a sustainable vision capability within the plant.
What You'll Do:
- Lead the deployment, calibration, and optimization of bin-picking camera systems across Body Shop operations.
- Validate vision algorithms, lighting setups, and robot-camera coordination to ensure reliable part detection and pick accuracy.
- Collaborate with robotics and controls teams to align vision systems with robot paths and process requirements.
- Travel to other GM sites executing bin picking to capture lessons learned and best practices.
- Implement proven strategies and avoid known failure modes during Orion's launch phase.
- Maintain documentation of cross-site findings and integrate them into local standards.
- Diagnose and resolve vision-related issues, including detection failures, false positives, and calibration drift.
- Support build events and early-stage production to ensure system stability and performance.
- Collaborate with maintenance and engineering teams to improve reliability and reduce downtime.
- Interface with vision system vendors and integrators to validate hardware and software performance.
- Partner with manufacturing, quality, and engineering teams to ensure seamless system integration.
- Travel as needed to supplier sites for equipment validation and launch support.
- Ensure vision system documentation, backups, and calibration records are complete and up to date.
- Enforce GM vision standards and safety protocols across all installations and operations.
- Mentor junior engineers and Tech 5 team members on vision system fundamentals and troubleshooting.
- Prepare vision system readiness reports and present technical updates to plant leadership.
- Communicate effectively across departments to support strategic decision-making and launch success.
Required Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in automotive manufacturing or vision system integration.
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer vision, robotics, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Proficiency in bin-picking technology, including 3D vision systems, camera calibration, and object recognition algorithms.
- Experience integrating vision systems with Fanuc robots and PLC-controlled environments.
- Strong understanding of lighting, part presentation, and environmental factors affecting vision performance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Hands-on experience with multiple bin-picking platforms and camera technologies.
- Familiarity with GM vision standards and Body Shop automation architecture.
- Demonstrated success implementing lessons learned from other sites into new launches.
- Comfort with vision system documentation, backups, and calibration audits.
- Experience working with equipment suppliers and integrators during launch phases.
- Proven ability to lead technical teams and drive cross-functional collaboration.
- Experience mentoring engineers and coordinating with suppliers and integrators.
- Strong communication skills and ability to influence across departments.
- Skilled in root cause analysis and Practical Problem Solving (PPS).
- Commitment to quality, uptime, and process optimization.
