Work Arrangement

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Milford, MI or Warren, MI three times per week or other frequency dictated by the business.

The Role
We are seeking a high-energy, technically agile individual to support high voltage battery applications at GM. The System Safety Engineer will work in a fast-paced and iterative work environment to ensure that system safety processes and methods are applied during the creation, development, and validation of high voltage batteries. They will be responsible for specifying system and safety requirements that can be met under all operating and customer usage conditions.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Perform hazard analysis and risk assessments for systems powered by high-voltage batteries, and develop corresponding safety concepts and strategies
  • Apply functional safety analysis techniques-such as functional interface analysis, fault tree analysis, dependent failure analysis, software safety, and hardware integrity-to derive safety requirements
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with hardware, software, service, release, and advanced engineering teams to develop and allocate safety requirements
  • Provide system safety input to product engineering teams to support the resolution of development-related safety issues
  • Lead both informal and formal peer reviews of safety cases
  • Communicate system safety processes across the organization as needed
  • Utilize change management tools and processes for configuration management of safety requirements
  • Promote common implementation strategies and drive complexity reduction where feasible

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Math, Physics, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in the development of electrical or electromechanical systems and/or components
  • Strong understanding of verification and validation processes
  • Familiarity with hardware design, software interfaces, and failure modes
  • Solid grasp of engineering theory and principles related to electromechanical mechanisms and control systems
  • Knowledge of serial data communication protocols
  • Willingness to travel between Warren Tech Center and Milford Proving Grounds as required

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience with the design and safety mechanisms of high-voltage battery systems
  • Working knowledge of functional safety standards such as ISO 26262, IEC 61508, or UL 9540
