Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Milford, Michigan three times per week, at minimum.

The Role:

The Low Voltage Infrastructure Team within the Embedded Platform Systems & Infrastructure organization is focused on the development of systems and controls centered around on-vehicle low voltage power generation, energy storage, power management, distribution, and consumption on ICE, EV and PHEV vehicle platforms. As a Staff Systems Engineer - Low Voltage Feature Owner, you will serve as GM's expert-level individual contributor for low voltage feature definition, power consumption strategy, and cross-functional execution. This role is intended for a recognized technical expert who applies highly specialized domain knowledge, exercises broad independent judgment, leads large cross-functional efforts, and drives outcomes that influence multiple teams and functional objectives.

You will own and define specific low voltage system features through understanding of customer use cases and expectations. You will drive GM's industry leadership of optimized low voltage consumption by defining low voltage energy consumption use cases, setting consumption targets, analyzing and driving reductions in power consumption for complex devices and features, and assessing competitor low voltage consumption performance.

What You'll Do:

  • Define low voltage energy use cases and lead development and decomposition of system performance requirements and energy consumption targets for features and components.
  • Define and own various low voltage system features, driving their implementation through Feature Technical Specification.
  • Ensure end-to-end traceability from system requirements and targets to subsystem, hardware, software, and ART solution requirements, as well as to validation artifacts and test cases.
  • Analyze status to low voltage energy targets, identify gaps and tradeoffs, and lead corrective actions with the appropriate product, vehicle, and engineering teams.
  • Lead complex technical decisions involving low voltage power consumption, optimization strategies, buy-offs, and escalations across multiple stakeholders.
  • Develop, maintain, and communicate high-quality technical documentation and system specifications using tools such as DNG, and track issues and changes through Jira-based workflows.
  • Influence technical direction beyond the immediate feature by contributing impactful ideas, improving methods and practices, and helping integrate work across related teams and disciplines.
  • Act as an indirect technical leader and subject matter expert, guiding teams through ambiguity, aligning stakeholders, and helping drive delivery of metrics and outcomes tied to GM strategic priorities.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering.
  • 7+ years of engineering experience in embedded controls, systems engineering, requirements or architecture development, or complex electrical distribution systems, with experience gained in automotive, adjacent industries or other highly regulated technical domains.
  • Experience analyzing, estimating, and reducing low voltage power consumption of vehicle components, ECUs, and features.
  • Ability to process a large amount of information flow, identify multiple parameters, interdependencies and inconsistencies to provide both high-level systems overview and deep domain expertise.
  • General understanding of vehicle electrical architectures, communication protocols, and ECU wakeup strategies.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, including independent judgement and decision-making skills, where problems are very unusual and extremely difficult.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects and assignments with a high level of autonomy and accountability for results
  • Demonstrated ability of leading cross-functional teams, influencing without direct authority, and building relationships in difficult circumstances.
  • Solid understanding of the major vehicle systems.
  • Deep knowledge of Systems Engineering principles and a proven track record of successful implementation.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in writing and comprehending software and hardware requirements and interfaces.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Master's degree in engineering with a focus on Controls, Electrical, Mechanical, and/or Systems Engineering.
  • 10+ years of engineering experience in embedded controls, systems engineering, requirements or architecture development, or complex electrical distribution systems, with experience gained in automotive, adjacent industries or other highly regulated technical domains.
  • Proficiency in Agile processes and built-in quality concepts such as Behavioral Driven Development.
  • Experience executing production programs through launch
  • Proven expertise in low voltage power consumption analysis and reduction.
  • Record of innovation in systems, subsystems, or feature design: patents, awards, or publications.
  • Development experience with Software Defined Vehicle electrical architecture.
  • Exposure to MBSE, including Rhapsody modeling (activity, use-case, sequence, context).
  • Experience with requirements management tools (i.e. DOORs, DNG, Markdown, etc).
  • Experience with change management tools (i.e. Jira, GIT, etc).
  • Experience leveraging simulation environments and plant modeling for testing or requirements generation is a plus (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, D-Space HIL, SIL, ETAS Inca, etc.).
  • Exposure to functional reliability engineering, functional safety, and regulatory compliance.

Company Vehicle:

Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate. Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.
