Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Milford three times per week, at minimum.
The Role:
Safety Design Software Architect works jointly with System Safety Engineering to develop the Solution Context and Intent at the Software level by defining requirements and communicating the solution vision. They also analyze technical trade-offs, determine the primary components and subsystems, identify the interfaces and collaborations between them, define Nonfunctional Requirements (NFRs), guide Enablers through the Program and Solution Kanban systems, and work with Product and Solution Management, System Safety, and Suppliers to help ensure the allocated System Safety requirements and strategy are met.

This individual will play a critical role in aligning teams on the Agile Release Train (ART) and Solution Train to a shared technical direction with System Safety. They also partner with the Agile Teams to elaborate and develop the solutions, validating technology assumptions, evaluating implementation alternatives, and creating the Continuous Delivery Pipeline.
What You'll Do:
Establish relationships and collaborate with other organizations and teams, such as System Safety, Advanced Controls Engineering, and other development teams.
- Provide technical training and establish effective mechanisms of knowledge sharing.
- Lead high severity safety-related investigations and work with other Safety Design Software Architects to resolve safety issues.
- Analyze the full control system and visualize what issues / faults can occur and build designs that mitigate those risks.
Define Safety software architecture elements to meet allocated System Safety requirements:
- Participate with System Safety Engineering in planning/defining high-level design of the product solution; explore solution alternatives.
- Operate within the business constraints when analyzing the impact of design decisions.
- Architect the solution for scalability, maintainability, testability, etc.
- Define subsystems and their interfaces, allocate responsibilities to sub systems, understand solution deployment and communicate requirements for interactions with the solution context.
- Derive lower-level system requirements from the System Safety requirements for function or interfaces (example: deploy-ability / portability).
- Support the ARTs during Planning and Implementation with technical guidance, review system architecture designs in all areas of ART planning.
- Assist in Backlog refinements to identify Safety Critical features and functions.
- Ensure proper prioritization of Safety Critical requirements.
- Ensure adherence to Development Vehicle Usage Levels (DVUL) and Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) requirements and timelines.
- Plan and develop the Architectural Runway for the SW Safety strategy.
- Create enabler Features / Stories aligned to Program / Solution Roadmap / Safety Cases
- Advocate for Enabler requirements supporting the System Safety strategy.
Enable the Continuous Delivery Pipeline through appropriate design guidelines
- Provide and monitor the necessary adherence to appropriate design guidelines for Safety Critical Software.
- Support Built in Quality / Continuous Compliance.
Define Safety System Requirements at the Software/Software Architecture abstraction level :
- Perform Software Safety Analyses based on derived requirements allocated by System Safety.
- Establish System Safety requirements generated by the above analysis or decomposed from the allocated System Safety requirements.
- Define Safety Critical calibrations jointly with System Safety and Calibration Technical Specialist.
- Participate in the definition of product development requirements.
- Ensure proper completion of all necessary business records and documentation.
- Participate/validate system demonstration adherence to System Safety requirements.
Help direct the Scrum team development.
- Prioritize, along with other Safety Design System Architects, the scrum team's Backlog.
- Define deliverables for Scrum team development of System Safety monitors.
- Mentor Software/Controls engineers into becoming capable Safety System Architects.
- Review System Safety monitor designs and confirm overall quality.
Additional Description
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- BS in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science.
- 5+ years of engineering experience with at least.
- 3 years in Functional or System Safety.
- Demonstrated proficiency in C/C++ Programming and auto-code generated from Simulink models with a minimum of 5 years' experience.
- Demonstrate strong development expertise in applying the dynamic system modeling principles and control theories.
- 3+ years of experience in implementing safety-critical design features such as redundancy and fail-safe mechanisms.
- 5+ years of experience in Software-in-the-Loop, Model-in-the-Loop and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Simulation.
- 5+ years of experience with calibration and rapid controller prototyping tools.
- 5+ years of experience using Simulink, MATLAB, DOORs and GIT environment(s); plant modeling and analysis tools.
- 2+ years of experience with battery safety mechanisms, state-of-charge (SOC), state-of-health (SOH), and thermal management.
- Strong knowledge of algorithm development and calibration for Transmission controls.
- Understanding of OBDII standards related to transmission.
- Strong understanding of major automotive subsystems.
- Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrate appropriate interpersonal styles and communications methods to work optimally with business partners to meet mutual goals.
- Be familiar with ISO26262 and applicable FMVSS standards.
- Proven ability to develop the detailed root cause of failures and establish a quick resolution.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)
- MS in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science Embedded controls development experience.
- 8+ years of engineering experience with at least 5 years in Functional or System Safety or Safety.
