Principal Software Engineer - Vehicle Experiences Engine Software

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Mountain View, CA three times per week, at minimum.

The Role

The Vehicle Experiences Engine software organization is a dynamic and fast-paced team responsible for designing and developing embedded software platforms for Infotainment and Software Defined Vehicle solutions. The scope of this work includes operating systems, their BSP layers, core system services, and device drivers. We are developing a world-class GM experience for our customers and driving real changes for the most iconic automaker on the planet. Our team delivers platform solutions for SoCs that enable secure and reliable execution of Infotainment, Autonomous Driving and other high-compute applications. We are offering this challenging position to passionate professionals to lead engineering effort in some critical domains within the Vehicle Experience Engines organization, ideal for those looking to advance their careers and be a part of an organization focused on innovation, speed, and business value.

What You'll Do

  • Define and lead software strategy for new technology, highly complex features, or significant enhancements for current, new, or major programs, with a focus on
  • Vehicle Data delivery from mechatronic networks and other ECUs.
  • Security, including necessary data encryption, integrity protection, authentication throughout all phases of vehicles' manufacturing and use.
  • Software and firmware programming from supplier factory to assembly plant to in-field OTA Updates.
  • Define and lead Infotainment software development working in Linux and Android, while interacting with other operating systems and runtimes.
  • Provide senior technical leadership and expertise to the development teams for the entire software development lifecycle.
  • Lead and generate technical solutions including specifying requirements, functional decomposition, analysis, design, development, and testing for Infotainment software embedded in vehicle components.
  • Perform software optimization analysis to improve system performance. Analyze and resolve performance, memory leaks and deadlocks issues.
  • Work with and bridge across multiple disciplines, including Engineering, DevOps, Product teams, Program teams, and Information Technology, to make appropriate system level design trades.
  • Stay abreast of new technologies and competitive products; define GM's technical strategies in the areas of immediate responsibility.
  • Ensure the designed solutions conform to non-functional requirements such as scalability, maintainability, reliability, extensibility, usability, and security.
  • Challenge current implementations and innovate to advance competitiveness and improve quality.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to senior and junior engineers.
  • Create and communicate vision & strategies specific to functional responsibilities. This includes preparing and giving presentations to senior and executive management.

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Electronics & Communication, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or related degree.
  • 15+ years of experience in Embedded software development and launching quality software into production.
  • Demonstrated successful technical track record leading software development teams in complex system environments.
  • Experience in the development of automotive-related infotainment solutions.
  • Experience in working with SoC suppliers such as Qualcomm and NVIDIA on the development, customization and integration of automotive BSP software stacks.
  • Solid expertise and exceptional knowledge in Embedded systems, QNX/RTOS, Linux, and Android systems.
  • Excellent understanding of the embedded system requirements, Inter ECU communications, and stringent timing requirements.
  • Technical: Java / C++, operating systems and runtime environments, safety, security
  • Expertise with Android SW stack and flows, OS startup sequences, interaction models between domains.
  • Being a go-getter and excellent problem solver with demonstrated proven technical strength.
  • Must be quality conscious, able to work around the obstacles and find the right solution in short timeframes.
  • Very effective interpersonal and leadership skills that inspires high-performing teams.
  • Superb written and verbal technical communication skills, excellent ability to incorporate other engineer's ideas and explain their own.

Compensation : The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of New York, Colorado, California, or Washington.

  • The salary range for this role is 277,000 to 424,000. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.


  • Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
