Principal Program Manager, AI Strategy and Governance

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the Technical Innovation Center in Mountain View, CA or Warren, MI three times per week, at minimum. This position can be located at either of these 2 locations.

We are looking a Principal Program Manager to lead the execution and scale of GM's enterprise AI strategy, focusing on integrating advanced AI across critical software platforms and business domains.

In this highly cross-functional and strategic role, you will drive complex AI initiatives from concept through delivery, partnering with technical, business, and executive stakeholders to embed AI into GM's enterprise operations, customer platforms, and vehicle ecosystems. You will shape the roadmap, governance, and change management practices required to drive responsible, scalable, and high-impact AI transformation across the company.

What You'll Do

  • Own AI deliverables for the corporate roadmap
  • Translate corporate strategy into actionable technical roadmaps, timelines, and deliverables, and lead end-to-end execution of strategic AI initiatives across multiple business units and technical domains, driving cross-functional alignment and sustained momentum to deliver on quality and on time
  • Partner with product, engineering, research, and business stakeholders to scope and deliver enterprise-scale AI programs, from pilot to production
  • Operationalize AI governance by embedding compliance, ethical AI standards, and responsible usage across initiatives
  • Drive alignment across executive and cross-functional teams, ensuring visibility, accountability, and outcome tracking; Act as a key communicator and influencer with executive stakeholders, distilling complex technical topics into clear, compelling narratives
  • Champion AI best practices in development workflows, change management, and product lifecycle
  • Influence enterprise tooling and infrastructure investments to support AI model development, evaluation, and deployment at scale

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • 10+ years of experience in program management or product/program leadership, including 3+ years in AI, ML, or data-driven platforms
  • BS or MS degree in an Engineering-related discipline
  • Proven ability to lead large-scale, cross-functional AI/ML or software programs in complex enterprise environments
  • Experienced in leading cross-functional collaboration across technical and business domains to deliver unified outcomes
  • Strong analytical mindset with exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate complex topics clearly and effectively
  • Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities, with a passion for fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration
  • Expertise in program management methodologies (Agile, hybrid, scaled delivery models) and tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence)

What will give you a competitive edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or MBA with technical focus
  • Experience in the automotive or industrial domain, especially with AI-enhanced platforms
  • Experience with developing from scratch and scaling engineering or operational processes
  • Prior leadership of AI transformation programs within a Fortune 500 or high-growth tech company

Compensation: The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of the California Bay Area.

  • The salary range for this role is $234,000 to $358,000. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
  • Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.

Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.
