Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Orion, MI on a full-time basis.

The Role:

This position offers a unique opportunity to shape how General Motors designs and implements packaging solutions across the enterprise. The Packaging Engineer will lead the development and execution of lean, cost-effective packaging systems that support manufacturing efficiency, product protection, and sustainability goals. This individual will collaborate with cross-functional teams to support new program launches, continuous improvement initiatives, and enterprise-wide packaging strategies.

What You'll Do:

Work as One Team with VS Material, LMS Execution, and Packaging Development teams to execute packaging solutions for all product programs. Manage packaging budgets, timelines, and deliverables to ensure successful launch and steady-state operations. Support the long-term packaging vision for the plant and enterprise.

  • Design and implement lean packaging solutions for inbound and outbound material flow
  • Develop and maintain packaging specifications, standards, and scorecards
  • Optimize packaging for ergonomics, safety, cost, and sustainability
  • Collaborate with suppliers to develop packaging that meets GM requirements
  • Support PFEP development and integration with packaging strategies
  • Drive packaging compliance with GM Global Manufacturing System (GMS) principles
  • Analyze packaging performance and lead continuous improvement initiatives
  • Support launch execution and steady-state packaging improvements
  • Lead packaging trials, validation, and approval processes
  • Coordinate with logistics, manufacturing, and engineering teams to ensure seamless packaging integration
  • Monitor and report packaging KPIs and cost savings
  • Support BIQ and quality objectives through robust packaging design
  • Ensure packaging meets regulatory and environmental standards
  • Develop and track packaging budgets and capital expenditures
  • Provide updates to plant staff and program teams as required

Additional Description

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in Packaging Engineering, Manufacturing, or Supply Chain
  • Strong analytical, computer, presentation, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects
  • High level of analytical ability and problem-solving for complex challenges
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, MS Office (Excel, Access, Project, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of packaging materials, design principles, and testing standards
  • Familiarity with manufacturing and assembly processes
  • Understanding of supply chain and logistics operations
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with ability to present to all levels of the organization

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with GMOS and PFEP
  • Project management and launch execution experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Packaging Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field
  • Knowledge of sustainable packaging practices and regulatory compliance
