The primary responsibilities of this position are to support the financial reporting and government accounting processes, systems and controls for GM's governmental contracting business unit, GM Defense. This position requires an understanding of internal and external reporting requirements and applicable accounting activities associated with Government contracting. This role will also serve as a strategic business partner related to the design, testing and implementation of business processes to increase clarity, improve efficiency, shorten decision cycle times and reinforce financial integrity and accountability.
This position requires either a U.S. Person (as defined in applicable export regulations) or a non-U.S. Person who is eligible to obtain required export authorization(s)
Role may require DoD Security Clearance
Responsibilities
- Support financial month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close process, including the preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations and variance analysis
- Develop a detailed understanding of GM Defense's processes and systems to identify control gaps and any opportunities to streamline processes and controls
- Maintain understanding of and ability to apply and operationalize accounting and financial reporting standards (GAAP), and SEC rules and regulations with Government accounting (CAS and FAR/DFARS)
- Support the Controllership and Finance organizations to evaluate current accounting practices and policies with a focus on continuous improvement and optimization
- Identify, interpret, and analyze potential accounting risks and issues
- Research and analyze the accounting implications of key transactions and contracts. Ensure business transactions and implemented processes conform to SOX control frameworks as well as CAS and FAR/DFAR requirements
- Identify and execute internal controls, SOX compliance and financial procedures
- Ensure financial reporting processes focus on accuracy, timeliness, and conformity with professional accounting standards and best practices in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
- Support the design, testing and implementation of GM Defense accounting and reporting processes, systems, and controls
- This job is not eligible for relocation benefits. Any relocation costs would be the responsibility of the selected candidate
Additional Description
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, mathematics, business administration or related
- 2 years of professional experience in accounting, or finance
- Ability to work with a high level of independent judgment and initiative, while being able to rapidly take on and assimilate work from existing team members when required
- Ability to understand and apply accounting and financial reporting standards (GAAP)
- Willing to take on additional responsibilities, attend training, and learn new technical skills
- Ability to collaborate with business, IT, and data analysis resources to provide accounting support for strategic projects and initiatives to drive measurable results and documented solutions
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with firm fixed price (preferred), T&M and cost-plus contracts (preferred)
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Chartered Accountant (CA) (preferred)
- Public accounting firm experience (preferred)
- Experience using SAP for government contract accounting (preferred)
- Government contract accounting experience (preferred), Cost accounting standards (CAS) and FAR/DFARs knowledge
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Complex problem solving and analytical abilities
- Strong project management skills
- Ability to take a strategic, transformational point of view
- Passion for innovation, automation, and technology
- Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated commitment to teamwork and partnerships
- Understanding of (or interest in learning) data structure, data interfaces and systems landscape
- Solves problems and develops new analytical methods to streamline decision making
- Collaborates accounting information flow with other staffs and business units for optimal decisions
- Initiative to improve and modernize processes, reporting and controls
