This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to [Lake Orion Assembly, Lake Orion MI or Detroit/Hamtramck, Detroit MI ] on a full-time basis

There are two openings for this role. 1 being location at Lake Orion the other will be located at Detroit/Hamtramck plant.

This position will lead the Dangerous Goods Transportation (DGT) Program for the site (fence line to fence line). Responsibilities include working for and taking direction from the DGT Regional Technical subject matter expert (SME), the Regional DGT Steering Committee, and the functional steering committee member responsible for the site to assure compliance to government regulations and GM global policies and regional procedures that the site operates and ships DG material. The DGT on-site SME will provide direction to the DG trained on-site personnel on all matters DGT and be the on-site liaison ensuring compliance is maintained, communication is provided to plant management and all required DG hierarchy, and oversight of all DGT matters.

Key areas of responsibility will include:

Position requires local knowledge into all areas of dangerous goods transportation, including, but not limited to the following:

Training, Security, Packing / Containers, Shipping Papers, Loading / Unloading, Placarding, Exclusions & Special Permits, and requirements applicable to the different transportation modes of air, sea, motor carrier, rail, tanker, etc. that are applicable to the assigned site.

Environmental regulatory shipments; Chemical Manager shipments; Medical shipments; IT shipments; Powerhouse shipments; inbound bulk fuels to name a few to be aware of.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Attend and maintain country specific DG for all GM personnel on-site and validate proper training for GM on-site suppliers
  • Maintain centrally DG certifications for all on-site GM personnel
  • Understand who is certified and how to obtain non-GM personnel certification when necessary and impact of new regulations to the site for all modes of shipping
  • Develop a comprehensive list of parts and materials (both direct and indirect) that can be potentially identified as DG in transportation; ensure that this list includes GM part numbers, UN identification numbers, and the corresponding Safety Data Sheet (SDS); this is to be communicated to all personnel who may come into contact with these materials
  • Maintain site shipping papers in accordance with local regulations and GM retention policy including Environmental manifests oversite
  • Train others at the site on regulations, policies, and procedures; this can include DGT awareness training
  • Develop local common work instructions pertaining to the handling of DG materials and the shipment of materials from the facility
  • Perform required self-assessments ensuring proper documentation is loaded into the system; corrective action plans are identified and mitigation plans are implemented, and communication is made to appropriate local, Legal, and DG management
  • Participate in Regional DGT SME monthly meetings and other required organized regional events
  • Read and understand your roles and responsibilities in the RASIC that is maintained on the Regional and Global share point sites
  • Ensure a sufficient supply of DG related materials is maintained on-site to ensure that DG field personnel can operate effectively, this includes, labels, placards, DG certified boxes, reference materials (or access via the internet), and any other materials required by local laws and regulations

This job is not eligible for relocation benefits. Any relocation costs would be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Additional Description

Required Skills:

  • 2 years post graduate experience with Dangerous Goods, Transportation, Logistics or related
  • High level ability to analyze and interpret regulatory requirements
  • High level of oral and written communication skills required
  • Very high level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others, including contacts outside GM
  • High level of planning and organizational ability required
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are complex and solutions need to be identified and implemented rapidly

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Experience with Supply Chain or Logistics
  • Certification in region and/or country specific DGT programs (i.e. 49 CFR, TDG, NoM's, ADR/DGSA, IATA, IMDG, etc.)
  • Internationally recognized certifications (i.e. IATA, IMDG, DGSA, CDGP, etc.)
  • Compliance experience in logistical field operations and/or audit
  • Cross functional experience in bridging matrix organizations to work towards a single goal
  • Skilled in managing projects
