Senior Manager- IaaS (Containers, OS and Language Runtimes)

Position Description

As a Senior Manager , you will collaborate with cross-functional teams, providing technical leadership to innovate, design, and optimize container runtimes, operating systems, and language runtime environments. You will drive the strategic technical roadmap, ensuring the delivery of high-quality products and unlocking new engineering capabilities. Additionally, you will maintain GEICO's operating systems, contribute to the upstream Linux community, and optimize runtimes for Java, GoLang , Node.js, Python, and .NET environments.

Position Responsibilities

As a Senior Manager , you will:

  • Lead the strategic design, development, and optimization of container runtimes, operating systems, and language runtime environments.
  • Manage a team of highly skilled engineers, providing mentorship, guidance, and support to foster professional growth and development.
  • Collaborate closely with upstream Linux communities to contribute to OS maintenance and enhancements, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives .
  • Ensure the security, availability, and performance of containerized applications across various programming languages, implementing rigorous measures to safeguard critical assets.
  • Keep abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends, guiding the team in recommending and implementing innovative solutions to drive continuous improvement.
  • Define and enforce best practices and standards in container runtime technology, operating systems, and language runtimes, fostering a culture of excellence and efficiency.
  • Take a hands-on approach in the deployment, scaling, and lifecycle management of containerized applications and language runtime environments, ensuring seamless operations.
  • Utilize agile methodologies to effectively prioritize tasks, manage workload, and meet project deadlines.
  • Communicate technical concepts and solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, facilitating alignment and understanding across teams.

  • Implement and enforce robust security measures for container runtimes, operating systems, and language runtimes, mitigating risks and vulnerabilities effectively.
  • Collaborate closely with quality assurance teams to ensure the reliability and efficiency of container runtime solutions, driving continuous enhancement and optimization.
  • Stay at the forefront of emerging container and cluster management trends, technologies, and best practices, applying insights to enhance GEICO's IaaS/PaaS strategies effectively.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the team, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure the security, availability, and performance of containerized applications across various programming languages.
Qualifications
  • Extensive experience in partnering with engineering teams and transferring research to production, demonstrating a track record of successful collaboration and delivery.
  • Strong familiarity with continuous delivery and infrastructure as code practices, driving efficiency and agility in development and deployment processes.
  • Proven expertise in designing, deploying, and optimizing container runtimes, operating systems, and language runtime environments, with a focus on driving performance and reliability.
  • Deep knowledge of Docker, Podman , containerd , and related container orchestration platforms, enabling effective management and orchestration of containerized applications.
  • Proficiency in operating systems, especially Linux, and managing end-to-end container image lifecycles, ensuring seamless operations and optimization.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, startup-like environment, demonstrating adaptability and resilience in dynamic settings.
  • Experience in people management, with a track record of effectively leading and developing high-performing engineering teams.
  • Knowledge of developer tooling across the software development lifecycle, facilitating efficient collaboration and workflow optimization.
  • Experience in building resilient, scalable, and efficient systems architecture and design, driving innovation and effectiveness in infrastructure solutions.
  • Fluency in DevOps concepts, Cloud Architecture, and operational frameworks, enabling effective deployment and management of cloud-based infrastructure.
  • Specialization in at least one modern language such as Go or Rust, demonstrating proficiency in building and optimizing language runtime environments.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and proactive approach to security risks and vulnerabilities, ensuring robust protection of organizational assets.
  • Excellent communication skills to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences, facilitating alignment and understanding across teams and stakeholders. Strong familiarity with continuous delivery and infrastructure as code practices.
Experience
  • 6 + years of professional experience in building Linux distros, building highly secure, scalable, and reliable operating systems tailored for diverse deployment environments, including private and public clouds.
  • 6+ years of experience with open-source frameworks is desired
  • 5 + years of experience of developing and running container orchestration platforms for large enterprises at scale.
  • 5 + years of experience in design, architecture and implementation of highly secure, scalable, and reliable enterprise grade platforms and applications
  • 5+ years of hands-on work experience supervising 10+ personnel in a technical environment
  • 4+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or Bare metal
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science , Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience
Annual Salary
$120,000.00 - $261,500.00
The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate's work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
