Distinguished Engineer - Database Platform
Position Summary
GEICO is seeking an experienced Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance , zero-downtime database platforms, and applications . You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while co-creating the culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.
Position Description
Our Distinguished Engineer works with Staff Engineers and Sr. Engineers to innovate and build new systems, improve, and enhance existing systems and identify new opportunities to apply their knowledge to solve critical problems. You will lead the strategy and execution of a technical roadmap that will increase the velocity of delivering products and unlock new engineering capabilities. The ideal candidate has deep technical expertise in the data base platform domain .

Position Responsibilities
As a Distinguished Engineer II, you will:
- Focus on a few key areas and provide technical leadership to the enterprise
- Collaborate with product managers, team members, customers, and other engineering teams to solve complex problems
- Develop and execute technical software development strategy for a variety of domains
- Accountable for the quality, usability, and performance of the solutions
- Utilize programming languages like .NET, Python , Golang , C# or other languages
- Be intimately familiar with relational and/or NoSQL databases , including one or more of PostgreSQL, SQLServer , Oracle, Cassandra and TiDB .
- Deep understanding of container orchestration including Docker and Kubernetes
- Build and operate containerized database workloads at scale
- Mentor and help coach and strengthen the technical expertise and know-how of our engineering and product community
- Influence and educate leadership at all levels
- Consistently share best practices and improve processes within and across teams
- Analyze cost and forecast, incorporating them into business plans
- Determine and support resource requirements, evaluate operational processes, measure outcomes to ensure desired results, demonstrate adaptability and sponsor continuous learning
- You are customer-centric, always keeping the customer's experience at the forefront of the conversation
- You are transparent and decisive . You have a prejudice for action and an iterative approach to software
- You learn from your mistakes and pass the knowledge on to others
- Fluency and specialization with at least two modern languages such as Java, C++, Golang, Python or C# including object-oriented design
- Experience building products of micro- services-oriented architecture and extensible REST APIs
- Experience with the architecture and design of greenfield and legacy systems (architecture, design patterns, reliability, and scaling)
- Experience with continuous delivery and infrastructure as code
- Fluency in DevOps c oncepts, c loud a rchitecture , GitHub and Azure DevOps Operational Framework
- Experience in leveraging PowerShell scripting
- Experience in existing operational portals such as Azure Portal
- Experience with application monitoring tools and performance assessments
- Experience in security protocols and products: understanding of Active Directory, Windows Authentication, SAML and OAuth
- In-depth knowledge of CS data structures and algorithms
- Experience with solving analytical problems with quantitative approaches
- Ability to excel in a fast-paced, startup-like environment
- Knowledge of developer tooling across the software development life cycle (task management, source code, building, deployment, operations, real-time communication)
- Exemplary ability to design, perform experiments, and influence engineering direction and product roadmap
- Experience partnering with engineering teams and transferring research to production
- Proficient in HA database ar chitecture and tools
- Able to Configure and resolve issues related to SQL Server AlwaysOn Availability Groups and SQL Server Failover Cluster Instance or similar technologies
- 12+ years of professional experience in software development, programming languages and database infrastructure, installation, configuration and maintenance of the hardware, software, and network systems
- 10+ years of experience with architecture and design
- 6+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service
- 6+ years of experience in open-source frameworks
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science , Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience
Annual Salary
$120,000.00 - $300,500.00
The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate's work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
