Senior Associate, Credit Risk Management

Job Description Summary

The Credit Risk Associate will be a member of the Chief Risk Officer's team and primarily responsible for assessing the creditworthiness of airline and Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) customers.

The Credit Risk Associate will evaluate customers' financial health, determine the risk associated with entering commercial transactions, including long term service agreements, extending credit and/or providing financial services to them. This person will analyze financial statements, economic indicators, industry trends, and market conditions to make informed recommendations related to commercial transactions (e.g., new deals, restructurings, joint venture investments, etc..).

This role provides an opportunity to gain greater exposure to senior leadership-level analysis and business management through participation with the business teams and support of the risk organization. The Associate will be exposed to a broader risk and commercial transaction purview through direct interaction with the CRO.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

Financial Analysis

  • Analyze airline companies' financial statements.
  • Assess financial ratios, liquidity, leverage, profitability, and solvency to evaluate the financial health of the airline and MRO customers.
  • Conduct trend analysis and benchmarking to identify patterns and assess performance over time.
  • Evaluate the impact of industry-specific factors, such as fuel prices, wages, foreign currency, competition, regulatory changes, and market demand, on airline financials.

Credit Risk Assessment

  • Identify potential credit risks, such as default, bankruptcy, or financial distress, and propose risk mitigation strategies.
  • Develop credit scoring models and risk assessment tools to quantify credit risk and make recommendations for commercial decisions.

Industry and Market Research

  • Stay informed about developments in the airline industry, including market trends, competitive dynamics, and regulatory changes.
  • Monitor macroeconomic indicators, such as GDP growth, inflation rates, interest rates, and currency fluctuations, to assess the overall economic environment and its impact on airline credit risk.
  • Collaborate with industry experts, financial institutions, and internal experts to gather insights and market intelligence.

Reporting and Communications

  • Prepare standard, comprehensive credit reports and presentations summarizing analysis findings, credit assessment, and recommendations.
  • Communicate credit decisions, risk assessments, and recommendations to internal stakeholders, including business teams and senior management.
  • Participate in deal review discussions and Enterprise Risk Management meetings and provide expert opinions on credit-related matters.

Relationship Management

  • Collaborate with sales, underwriting, and relationship management teams to develop tailored credit solutions and address customer needs.
  • Help structure credit terms, conditions, and covenants with airline customers ensuring alignment with risk appetite and risk policies.
  • Develop relationships with financial institutions and lessors to better understand the broad macro trends in the industry.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree, with 5+ years of credit risk related experience, in finance, economics or a related field. At least 2 years related experience working at aircraft lessor and/or bank/rating agency focusing on airline industry.
  • Proven experience in leasing, credit analysis, financial modeling, and risk management, preferably in the airline industry
  • Strong understanding of financial markets and credit risk concepts.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to travel up to 20% of the time.

Desired Qualifications

  • Masters degree in finance, economics or related field.
  • Proficiency in financial analysis tools and software (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, Bloomberg, Moody's Analytics).
  • Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to interpret complex financial data.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present findings and recommendations clearly and persuasively.
  • Understanding of various products and structures, including loans, leases, partnerships, and equity investments.
