USA TODAY Sports Editor
USA TODAY is seeking a seasoned Sports Editor to foster the creation of world class journalism and predictable readership growth for a sports media giant.
The candidate will direct investigations, enterprise, general commentary and coverage of international tentpoles - particularly the Olympics - and be a front-facing leader for daily operations at the sports flagship of the nation's largest news organization.
This is a big job that demands strong leadership, proven project management and a commitment to creating change in an extremely fast-moving environment. The highest level of collaboration in the industry is required, including alongside peer leaders of USA TODAY's new NFL, college, women's sports and breaking news verticals.
This job reports to the Executive Editor of Sports of the USA TODAY Network, which includes more than 230 news organizations. The candidate will play a leading role in achieving the company's mission of becoming the most-read sports network in the nation.
An ability to coach writers to deliver exceptional journalism at the speed of news is required, from breaking news to long-form storytelling to quick-hit enterprise, hard-hitting commentary and everything in between.
Responsibilities:
- Lead USA TODAY Sports investigations, enterprise and general commentary at the speed of news.
- Lead coverage of summer and winter Olympics, including content and event planning and budget discipline.
- Create accountability via clear expectations and high efficiency to put USA TODAY on meteoric path to sports growth.
- Foster innovation reporting tactics to generate maximum readership,
- Play a leading role in identifying new-age techniques and products to grow the business in the short- and long-term.
- Work with sports leaders across the USA TODAY Network to maximize impact and grow the company.
- Work with Executive Editor, Sports, to develop cutting-age content revenue techniques to put the organization on a stable reinvestment path.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5-10 years as a respected sports journalism leader, with focus on world class journalism, digital content and multimedia platforms.
- Experience in high-level decision-making with complex, impactful or sensitive news content.
- Advanced understanding of various news and information content management systems.
- A history of successful leadership, collaboration, innovation and goal achievement.
- Demonstrated change leader who collaborates and communicates effectively with diverse peoples and personalities.
- Demonstrated record of leading a coverage team, including remote writers.
- Proven history of guiding strong watchdog, enterprise and opinion work across multiple platforms.
- Strong social media skills.
- Understanding of the best uses of live and recorded video and how to inculcate video skills throughout the team.
- Strong competitive instincts and intellectual curiosity.
- Command of media law and Principles of Ethical Conduct.

The annualized base salary for this role will range between $113,000. and $176,563. Variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, location, and union representation, if applicable.
