IndyStar is seeking a reporter to help cover a key beat in Indiana: high school sports. This reporter would team up with two other preps reporters to help meet the demand for great high school sports coverage across Indiana. We are looking for someone who can produce high-value storytelling, including enterprise stories that provide context and analysis, entertaining features and investigative pieces. The ability to break news is critical, and this reporter must be able to develop strong sourcing. This reporter will develop content that takes advantage of all delivery forms available to us, including social media, mobile, podcast, desktop, video, television and print.
The newsroom is the winner of three Pulitzer Prizes, including in 2021 for national reporting. You'll work with and learn from some of journalism's best while living in a vibrant and diverse city in the heart of the Midwest.

The high school sports reporter will report to assistant sports editor Matt Glenesk.

Key responsibilities:
- Primary responsibilities will focus on football (fall), boys and girls wrestling (winter), cross country (fall), golf (fall), track (spring), boys volleyball (spring) and recruiting (summer).
- IndyStar's preps coverage strategy to sports-specific beats has proven to be a key source of subscription growth. We want to build on that.
- Would also assist in coverage of big events (Indy 500, NBA All-Star Game, NCAA events).
- Be a curious, assertive and self-starting journalist who jumps to report on breaking news and trending topics with urgency.
- Harness social media and messaging platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and/or Reddit, as a newsgathering tool.
- Optimize stories for target audience groups using SEO and metrics information.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least two years of professional journalism experience.
- An entrepreneurial approach to growing audience and a dedicated following.
- Proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to take photos and record video/audio in the field.
- Solid news judgment that's guided by experience with audience metrics.
- Strong sense of journalism ethics and grounding in basics of media law.
- Commitment to reporting with fairness, compassion and sensitivity.
- Command of AP style and dedication to accuracy.
Expected pay range: $48,000-$52,000
