Delaware Online/The News Journal, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking an experienced reporter who can cover the rapid expansion and ensuing complexities of development in the state's most populous county from all angles. The successful candidate will understand when to write the quick story on new business coming to Delaware, as well as when to dig in to the watchdog stories about where developers got their money and the how and why they plan to spend it. This reporter also oversees the environmental impact of this development, working in concert with other reporters in the room as development touches local and state government, our court system and local dining and entertainment.
We want a reporter who can find not just what's coming to Delaware, but build sourcing to be ahead of the announcements, ribbon cuttings and press releases to give readers a behind-the-scenes look at what's happening in their neighborhoods. As part of this beat, the reporter is also responsible for a weekly newsletter showcasing these exclusive scoops in readers' inboxes first before hitting the website. It is accompanied by a corresponding Facebook page, What's Going There in Delaware, which serves as a key engagement tool for driving coverage and crowd sourcing.

We're looking for a reporter who is hungry to bring readers not just the new flight patterns at Wilmington Airport, but the challenges that come when its sole passenger airline carrier, Avelo, becomes President Donald Trump's pick for deportation flights. We want a reporter who wants readers to be just as excited as they are about how Wilmington's port is changing and how transportation and development are often hinged on and with the approval of New Castle County government. Similarly, we're looking for someone who can also appreciate why readers want and need to know about new restaurants and chains opening and closing in their communities - and eventually, what it says about Delaware's larger development goals.
In short, we want someone who writes for readers, answering their questions while bringing them information they didn't even realize they wanted to know. This beat requires a reporter who can juggle multiple assignments and work on breaking news as well as short- and long-term enterprise. You must understand analytics and how to use that information to your advantage. And you must be ready and willing to spend time in the community seeing these places firsthand, getting to know the players and showing up again and again to get the sourcing needed to tell these stories. This is not a remote position.
