The Consumer Marketing Strategy Director builds and leads the strategic plans to drive subscriber acquisition, increase engagement, and mitigate churn for two Gannett publications: The Democrat & Chronicle, based in Rochester, New York; and The Telegram & Gazette (telegram.com), based in Worcester, Massachusetts. The successful candidate will have a keen understanding of the market, collaborate with the news teams on marketing plans, work with various teams to execute the plan, and communicate results to the news and corporate teams.

  • Head of subscription sales and engagement for The Democrat & Chronicle, based in Rochester, New York; and The Telegram & Gazette (telegram.com), based in Worcester, Massachusetts
  • Direct reporting structure to consumer subscription and revenue team with a heavy dotted line to local GM
  • Must be able to work in the Worcester or Rochester office 60% of the time or as directed by the key manager

Base Salary: $105,000 - $115,000/annually

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Collaborative Planner:
    • Responsible for driving subscription volume and revenue by overseeing consumer sales and engagement results for The Democrat & Chronicle and the Telegram & Gazette.
    • Develop a strategic marketing plan that outlines sales and engagement efforts to drive revenue
    • Launch marketing programs to support newsroom initiatives that drive subscription growth including newsletters lead gen, social media followings, and native app downloads.
    • Work with news teams to incorporate high-performing and trending content into marketing plans
    • Responsible for planning, managing, and monitoring paid social media ads to drive subscription sales or improve engagement of existing subscribers while abiding by brand guidelines
    • Be present (onsite) at key meetings
    • Ensure website and ads are functioning as expected for both print and digital subscriptions
    • Communicate results with key stakeholders
    • Respond to changing trends internally and externally
    • Understand the competitive landscape in the market and factors that are impacting growth, including analysis of reach and market penetration
    • Adhere to all pricing strategies as defined by Local Revenue and Planning
    • Collaborate with Audience Development and Content Strategy teams to stay abreast of social media and search trends and best practices
    • Lead and be present at local events to drive top-of-funnel leads and brand awareness
  • Work With Enterprise Team to Optimize Results:
    • Develop and maintain best practices and standards in marketing materials and strategies across marketing channels
    • Work with Marketing Operations to ensure timely execution of sales efforts such as email communication, website ads, and other opportunities that drive sales and engagement
    • Work with the Analytics team to ensure proper tracking of results and to provide explanations as needed
    • Maintain highlights documentation that will be needed to understand trends including YOY changes and anomalies

Accountabilities

  • Head of subscription sales and engagement for The Democrat & Chronicle and the Telegram & Gazette
  • Direct reporting structure to the Consumer Subscription and Monetization team with a dotted line to the Local General Manager for both sites
  • Must be able to work onsite 60% of the time or as directed by the key manager

Requirements

  • Education/Certification Requirements:
    • Bachelor's Degree
    • 5+ years of sales and marketing experience
    • 2+ years of subscription sales experience
  • Experience Required or Preferred:
    • Must be a dynamic leader with a proven track record of evaluating, identifying, and executing strategic opportunities
    • Demonstrated experience collaborating with cross-functional teams
    • History of delivering results and implementing change
  • Specialized Knowledge Required or Preferred:
    • Required: Strategic marketing planner
    • Required: Ability to derive actionable insights from metrics and marketing data
    • Required: Knowledge and understanding of technology, paid media, search, new trends, and the latest in social media features

The annualized base salary for this role will range between $105,000 and $115,000. Base compensation is reflective of many factors, including, but not limited to, the market in which one lives/works, individual education level, skills, certifications, and experience. Note: variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable.
