The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is looking for anaudience-focused reporter to join our breaking and trending news team, which puts the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel at the center of what is happening and what people are talking about.
We want a reporter who is quick and flexible - able to identify story ideas, aggressively pursue them and present them in different formats. This reporter should be comfortable writing on deadline, be able to seamlessly move between topics and eager to pursue stories no matter how large or small.
In this role, you will work with reporters and editors across the newsroom and play a role in some of the biggest stories that emerge each day. At the same time, you should be able to develop your own story ideas.

The goal of this position is to reach new readers with creative story formats, including video, listicles, explainers and more. This reporter must have a passion for telling stories quickly when needed, in-depth when called for, and always with accuracy.
Thus, the reporter should be as comfortable taking inventive angles off the daily news, like writing "What's the big deal about Buc-ee's?" a Texas gas station coming to Wisconsin as rounding up reactions to something a politician said about Milwaukee.
This role covers a shift that starts at 6 a.m., to help the newsroom get a jump start on the day, including early coverage of public safety and weather.
Responsibilities:
- Monitor emails, social media, community groups and other sources to find stories.
- Use data and analytics to inform content decisions.
- Efficiently and accurately write stories, sometimes several per day.
- Find, pitch and swiftly produce stories on topics of emerging interest, with a focus on what readers want and need to know.
- Ensure content is properly optimized with conversational headlines, SEO, links, video and photo galleries.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related major preferred.
- Proven experience in journalism, preferably with on breaking news.
- Strong writing, reporting and multimedia storytelling skills.
- Experience using social listening and engagement tools to find story ideas.
- Uses data to help make editorial decisions.
- Experience shooting and editing smartphone video and photos.
- This role requires a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
