Intern, Government Relations- Summer 2024!

This position works within the External Relations department on the Government Relations team. This department is responsible for advancing Food Bank's government relations and policy agenda by interacting with the offices of government officials, coalitions, advocates, and community members. The team organizes information, events and meetings, and coordinates policy and advocacy communications to both internal and external audiences. In order to support these tasks, this position will:

Examples of Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Compiling and updating information to be imported into a customer relationship management (CRM) system for the team's Elected Officials, member agencies, and advocates. Examples include cleaning data, facilitating the import of data into a CRM (e.g. Raiser's Edge), updating Election Districts upon new redistricting guidelines, and creating profiles based on updated data.
  • Build and recruit for a Youth Advocacy Council that will regularly participate in Food Bank For New York City's advocacy actions relating to student hunger.
  • Create an evergreen digital advocacy toolkit for distribution.
  • Engage in grassroots community organizing. Examples of this project include phone banking to contact advocates to increase sign-ons for Food Bank's Action Alerts, staffing community events such as street fairs, and assisting in presentations on policy and advocacy opportunities.
  • Perform all other duties as required to support the goals of the Government Relations team.

Skills (Required & Recommended):

  • Compassionate, patient, and sensitive to the needs of people experiencing food insecurity.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Office 365, SharePoint, Outlook; knowledge of CRMs a plus.
  • Data-driven; highly attentive to detail with a keen interest in organizing large datasets.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to interact with diverse constituencies and maintain the highest level of professionalism.
  • Highly motivated, self-starter with ability to work independently, prioritize and multi-task.
  • Team player with an ability to work cooperatively with other departments and willing to accept new responsibilities and assignments.
