Position Overview

The Bioinformatics Engineer will contribute to the design and implementation new software solutions to process and interpret Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data for the purpose of cancer diagnostics. This post holder will be involved in producing software to orchestrate and execute analysis workflows as well as building new bioinformatics tools that operate directly on scientific data. Leveraging the latest data platforms and technologies together we will build cloud-based solutions ready for a production environment.

We are seeking candidates with a strong focus on quality throughout their work and who place high value on peer review, software testing and documentation. The successful candidate will join a geographically distributed team of highly motivated bioinformaticians and developers at the forefront of cancer diagnostics and be required to collaborate closely with scientists, IT and others create solutions to meet the underlying need. During recruitment we prioritise talent over experience with specific technologies and will provide opportunity to learn and experiment with any technology that is new to the successful candidate.

Essential Duties

include but are not limited to the following:

  • Contribute to the development of analytical pipelines, software, web application and data visualizations to support the development of novel assays, improvement of assays under development, and hypothesis testing requested Product Development and Computational Biology team.
  • Collect and document product and software requirements and findings from analyses and code developed and executed by themself and others.
  • Write and optimize SQL queries against MSSQL database.
  • Assist with the development of Python programs of medium to high complexity.
  • Perform accurate, complete, timely collection, validation, and tracking of research, commercial, and manufacturing data.
  • Assist with the construction of datasets and visualizations for reporting.
  • Ability to perform basic data analysis
  • Maintain accurate documentation of programs and procedures.
  • Assist with the integration of software components into pipelines and web applications.
  • Develop sufficient understanding and utilization of research, commercial, and manufacturing data management systems, processes, and procedures.
  • Provide functional expertise to development, study, and process teams.
  • Ability to integrate and apply feedback in a professional manner.
  • Ability to prioritize and drive to results with a high emphasis on quality.
  • Ability to deliver quality results in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, rapid growth environment.

  • Considerable periods of time may be spent concentrating and or analyzing data.
  • Ability to travel 10% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in science, life sciences, computer science, or field related to the essential duties.
  • 1+ years experience of demonstrated proficiency for solving problems with code using high-level programming languages (currently we mostly use Python but experience in other languages accepted).
  • Expertise in best practices for software development (such as Git, agile, code reviews, CI/CD).
  • Demonstrated ability to use a variety of programming languages, tools, and databases to compile and present accurate datasets.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office to include Excel and Word.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorisation to work in the United Kingdom without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years recent experience writing Python or another high-level programming language.
  • 1+ years of experience with SQL and MSSQL databases.
  • Experience with cloud computing software; including AWS, Azure.
  • Experience with Bioinformatics approaches, algorithms and tools.
  • Experience or knowledge of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) or the processing of NGS data.
  • Experience designing software systems.
  • Experience working with Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Basic skill in Linux command line.
  • Familiarity with molecular biology and bioinformatics tools.
  • Familiarity with web development.
