Job Summary

The Principal Mechanical Engineer acts as a SME and mentors new engineers within the business. Performs the planning, system design, system implementation, system maintenance and support of our data center HVAC systems. Lead small to medium scale HVAC projects and the roll out of mechanical HVAC engineering initiatives. Assists with development and implementation of mechanical HVAC engineering design standards, policies and procedures. Effectively interacts with other internal and external teams, including the design engineering, site engineering, construction management and regional operations teams, onsite support vendors and consultants on projects, policies and procedures. Plans and directs day to day operations and strategic direction of delivery of either a construction project or delivery of operations for a data center facility.

Key Responsibilities

Project Management
• Lead and manage mechanical engineering projects, with a focus on HVAC systems in mission-critical environments
• Review and oversee mechanical design initiatives to ensure they meet quality, sustainability, and performance expectations
• Provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary teams, both internally and externally

System Operation & Capacity Planning
• Bring advanced knowledge of HVAC systems, including diagnostics and repair of critical infrastructure
• Partner with design, construction, and capacity planning teams to resolve power and cooling limitations
• Optimise resource utilisation to support data centre growth and scalability

Leadership & Communication
• Lead and mentor a small team, providing support, removing blockers, and fostering a collaborative working culture
• Direct internal teams and external partners, including general contractors, design consultants, commissioning agents, and equipment vendors
• Contribute to internal development by hosting meetings, supporting professional growth, and ensuring clarity of communication at all levels - including executive stakeholders
• Develop and refine SOPs, MOPs, and other technical documentation to support operational excellence

Policy, Procedure & Standards Development
• Help shape and maintain best-in-class engineering policies and procedures
• Participate in policy reviews and contribute to the development of technical standards
• Ensure compliance through documentation review, commissioning activities, and on-site inspections

Problem Solving & Innovation
• Solve complex, cross-functional issues with autonomy and strategic insight
• Proactively recommend improvements to eliminate risk and enhance system performance
• Test the suitability of new technologies and components for future deployment



Qualifications and Experience
• Significant experience in a critical facility or data centre engineering environment
• Deep technical knowledge of mechanical engineering and HVAC system design
• Strong skills in data analysis and modelling, including proficiency in MS Excel
• Demonstrated experience managing large-scale projects with internal and external stakeholders
• Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive technical excellence
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent professional experience
