Controls Engineer

Job Summary

The Staff Controls Engineer is a seasoned professional that performs system maintenance and support. Leads projects with well defined and a finite scope using internal and external resources. Assists with development of policies and procedures. Effectively interacts with other internal and external teams, including the design engineering, site engineering, regional operations teams, onsite support vendors and consultants on projects, policies and procedures within a diverse scope. Mentors junior engineers.

Responsibilities

System Operation and Work Practices

  • Expert operating knowledge of control systems to include advanced diagnostics and repairs
  • Ability to apply knowledge of Equinix process and procedure and industry standards to resolve diverse issues
  • Uses safe working practices at an expert level (e.g. can apply procedure for lockout/tag out, can explain MSDS, etc.)
  • Evaluates and assures the safe working practices of others
  • Interacts with other engineering disciplines

Problem Solving

  • Consistently solves diverse, cross-functional issues requiring action and a high degree of initiative to resolve
  • Implements and makes recommendations for system level improvements to eliminate potential problems
  • Tests suitability of components for deployments

Internal/External Contact

  • Supports in mentoring junior team members
  • Supports in advising internal and external project team members
  • Assists in leading teams per project or initiatives such General Contractors, design teams, commissioning agents, equipment suppliers, etc.
  • Expert level communication to include multi-functional SOP development and relevant technical writing
  • Interactions are primarily to exchange information between departments within the organization
  • May include executive level communications in standardized templates

Technical Expertise

  • Has a full detailed understanding of typical electrical, fire protection, and HVAC system operation including typical optimization strategies and typical deficiencies.
  • Has expert controls system knowledge, typically confined to a few brands of system
  • Is a subject matter expert to others in the group
  • Participates by presenting at internal and/or external engineering seminars/conferences

Training

  • Acquires knowledge by rapidly gaining experience with systems, vendor training and shadowing others
  • Is SME with some systems and trains others inside and outside of the group

Develop Policy/Methods

  • Participates in review of policy and procedure documents

Assess Adherence to Policy

  • Assures consistency to developed standards and policy through review of documentation, participation in commissioning activities and Data Center physicals

Qualifications

  • 5+ years in control system design, operations, maintenance, and project planning with an emphasis and special focus on controls preferred
  • Bachelors degree preferred

The United States targeted pay range for this position in the following location is / locations are:

  • San Francisco, CA / Bay Area: $102,000 to $162,000 per year
  • California (Non-SF/Bay Area), Connecticut, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Washington state: $94,000 to $149,000 per year
  • Colorado, Nevada, Rhode Island: $85,000 to $135,000 per year

Our pay ranges reflect the minimum and maximum target for new hire pay for the full-time position determined by role, level, and location. Individual pay is based on additional factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education and/or training.

This position may be offered in other locations. Your recruiter can share more about the specific pay range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

The targeted pay range listed reflects the base pay only and does not include bonus, equity, or benefits. Employees are eligible for bonus, and equity may be offered depending on the position.
